Spartans Lock Up The Almont

Miguel Aguero is stellar against Bell Gardens.

(Montebello) Behind six touchdown passes from Miguel Aguero, the Schurr Spartans locked up the Almont League title Friday night with a 56-10 drubbing of the Bell Gardens Lancers at Ken Davis field on the campus of Schurr High School.

The Spartans were clicking on both sides of the ball as the defense held Bell Gardens to three points until 3:22 left in the fourth quarter on an eight yard run by Jesus Sandoval.

Bell Gardens drew first blood in the contest on a 25-yard field goal by Brandon Ponce. Ponce also set up the score by taking the opening kick off back 74 yards to the Schurr 13. The Lancers couldn’t get too much traction in the redzone and settled for the Ponce field goal.

The Spartan defense held Bell Gardens in check.

The ensuing kick off was fielded by Jeremiah Hartfield and returned to the Lancer 38. One play later Lance Babb II caught a short pass from Aguero and outraced the Bell Gardens defense to paydirt. Francisco Remigio nailed the extra point for the 7-3 advantage.

The Spartans proceeded to put up another 21 unanswered points to finish of the first half. Two more touchdown passes from Aguero of 12 and 21 yards to Hatfield and Sebastian Ramos and an eight yard run by Kevin Lopez capped the first half scoring barrage.

The second half was more of the same for Schurr as they came out of the locker room and promptly marched 67 yards on four plays for another score. The touchdown came on another pass from Aguero this time to Aaron Silva who got loose over the middle for 60 yards. Aguero finished the night hitting 16 of 22 passes for 384 yards and the six scores.

Hartfield’s second interception on the night set the Spartans up for another scoring opportunity. Schurr covered the needed 58 yards on only two plays with Remigio getting his number called on a pass from Aguero from 36 yards out. The Spartans were aided on the drive with 30 yards in penalties, a horse collar tackle and an ejection of Bell Gardens head coach Margarito Beltran for arguing the call.

Schurr finished off the scoring on the evening with Aguero’s final touchdown pass to Remigio who weaved his way through the Lancer defense for 77 yards and Lopez’s second score. Remigio only caught three passes but they were for a huge 126 yards and two touchdowns.

The Spartans will now finish off the season on the road at Alhambra and Bell Gardens will battle Montebello for the second spot in the Almont.

Schurr has always had the better “athletes” in the Almont there is no doubt about that. But coaching has always been the difference, between Coach Dick and Coach Ramos it was a revolving door for whatever reason. Coaching is a big deal but lets not fool our selves and think someone can walk in and change the culture or instantly win. it took Coach Gonzalez 4 years to reach the playoffs and a Almont League championship. It has taken Ramos 3 years to reach a Almont League championship. If we want to compare his record to Coach Ramos we should give him another year, if we compare it to Coach Gonzalez he gets two more years. Lets compare apples to apples. Now if we are going to compare what these three men did at their previous schools as head coach it is not close…Coach Beltran built La Serna into a perennial power; took his team to 3 finals in a row and winning one. Coach Gonzalez won a championship at St. Paul. Coach Ramos won a few league titles but did not have the success in the playoffs. Coach Ramos should win his first CIF championship this year with this highly athletic team. I wish him nothing but the best, just makes the league look that much better!

The 81’ team beat Serra High, yes Gardena Serra! Schurr hasn’t always been in Div 12. Schurr football will always have a better history than BG football and for that matter La Serna too. The man had a great run and put LS on the map. Now they are just competitive. The staff at Schurr is trying to bring back that pride and tradition, even if they have to start in Div 12. This is their HC third year at Schurr and Beltran’s second. Schurr lost the league championship by 7 points last year. BG is not close by no means, even with Beltran as their HC

Here some stats for you in 8 yrs won/loss record 76-28 .731 pct 6- 10 win seasons I guess Palmer flunked and played for 6 years! The 2015 team was his that went to another championship even tho he won’t get the credit. Before he came to LS I don’t think they ever won 10 plus games maybe in the 60’s.
All I’m saying is you guys won a chip in 81′ then 06′ Div 12 nice. But Beltran always scheduled up played higher division teams in preseason or his record would be even better.
Look if you guys had him I’d bet on you. You have the horses now so win another one. But if you don’t just realize the gap will narrow.
    Good luck!

If the Schurr starting freshman QB (hurt last two weeks) plays against BG, they blow them away.
BG doesnt have much to talk about on their freshman team that beat Schurr. I witnessed it first hand.

Hey another one that’s riding the Beltran sack. FYI Schurrs lower levels have lost back to back years and the variety has given them a whopping. Beltran don’t have LS kids no more, he better start recruiting because it’ not going to change. You’re right about the Schurr forgetting those games. Just like no one talks about how LS was doormat for so many years. Take away Frankie Palmer from those teams and you would of never heard about LS football nor Beltran.

I guess the Schur people have forgotten the a**kickings they took from Ls,a few years back from a veteran coach team of Beltran’s and those games we not close ,and starters were taken out by half.So let’s not forget where Ls was before he took over the program, and where it is now,it takes a few years for a change to occur and it starts in the lower levels which theSchur people already know since both lower levels lost to Bg !

Schurr was and is the team to beat this year, everybody knew that coming in. With the athletes they have there was no doubt. I give Montebello credit for playing them so tough because the score should not have been that close when you compare athletes. As for Bell Gardens, whether you are a Schurr, Montebello, Alhambra, Keppel, or San Gabriel fan it is apparent that Bell Gardens is rebuilding looking at what was their last year to this year. Did they improve…well they went 2-8 last year with no chance at playoffs to at worst 5-5 and probably in the playoffs. By definition that is an improvement. Schurr should win a CIF championship and be the team to beat for the upcoming season but understand and don’t underestimate Montebello or Bell Gardens. The Almont League looks like it should be fun for a while.
    Week 10:
    Schurr big over Alhambra
    Keppel Squeaks by San Gabriela
    Montebello beats BG by 10

Schurr, Montebello and Bell Gardens make the playoffs and all 3 get out of the 1st round.

You’re another one on Beltran’s old sack. Schurr won a title in 06’ thats was 11 years ago so they have won a ship in the the past 30. We have nothing but positives going on at Schurr and plan to keep it that way. Don’t knock the ones that keep pounding Mr. Beltran’s lancers. Schurr and Montebello ain’t going anywhere so for BG to turn it around they gotta go through either school.

I have no skin in the MHS SHS rivalry, just feel in the last 15 years, some of the best local football was coming from the hill. MHS has much to be proud of, just commenting that the oilers were the ones puffing their chests. 4 in a row is an accomplishment, it’s just a little short of the 9 or 10 in a row SHS ran off.

All you Schurr High fans are really tough. Look at where BG was when Beltran took over the cupboard was bare. They aren’t at the Elite level but Neither was LS when he took over. No one even knew where LS was. But he put them on the map!It will take some time but beware when he turns that program around we’ll see a different tune on these boards. Just sayin Win a Chip in this past 30 years then you can pop off!

Ol has been….We can compare both leagues but the unfortunate part is that until these teams play each other than we will never know. La Serna being at the top for the 5+ years should remain the team to beat until taken down. As far as BG rebuilding? I dont see much of a change from last year. Beltran doesn’t have the pool of players he had before. In the past he was able to pull players from Whittier and surrounding areas. Now all he has to pull from is Bell Gardens and ????Commerce?
If we want to compare programs. Look at what Ramos has done in the 3 seasons he has been at Schurr. The seniors he has now he was able to mold them for the last 3 years, the Seniors he has are what was left from that 10-0 freshman team. We all know the team lost some key players due to the players leaving to other programs. It seems that the players who stood have had buy in to what Ramos expects from his players.
He inherited a program that was on the decline. For many on this blog to continue to downgrade Schurr because they are in D12, is it their fault? Like i said before they were placed in D12 because of the years prior to the Ramos takeover. 4 years ago Schurr didnt make the playoffs. Ramos has gone to the playoffs his first two seasons and looks like he will be going to the playoffs this year. Seems like Ramos and staff have worked their tails off and now it shows with the product they put out on the playing field. Good luck to the Almont in the playoffs and Go Spartans!!!!!

***Reposting this from another article hoping I’ll get some feedback***
So I’ve shared my time on the gridiron (playing and coaching) and for some reason, I have now found myself on these damn blogs. LOL. I must say it is pretty entertaining.
With that said, When you start to compare these local area teams specifically in the Almont and Del Rio Leagues, who is the standout?
    Schurr barely beat Whittier.
Montebello beat Whittier in a close one but lost to Schurr in a similar one.
Santa Fe handles La Serna but had a battle against El Rancho.
El Rancho beats Montebello and Bell Gardens.
La Serna beats up on El Rancho & Whittier………
When you do a comparison between the two leagues, I think Beltran’s old Lancers at La Serna still seem to be up there despite their loss to Santa Fe. With regards to Beltran rebuilding the BG program, it is obvious they are headed in the right direction. I guess we will see how they do against Montebello this week.
    Any thoughts?

so all we kept hearing was…. “all schurr has is Babb” (4 catches 66 yards 1 Td)

still had over 500 yards of total offense. Aguero threw for 419.
not bad for only having one threat!

i count 10 penalties on Schurr
    only 6 for Bell Gardens

Don’t know what game you were watching there BG, but before the flag for a horse collar was called there was 8 straight penalties against Schurr prior to that call. The Refs actually saved you from being down 35-3 right before half with 3 straight penalties against us. The Refs did you justice yesterday, or the score might have been in the the high 60’s again. Your coach was looking for a scapegoat to jump ship and used the refs as his way out. The game was never in doubt, as you scored a field goal 2.5 minutes into the game and touchdown with 2.5 minutes left in the game (2nd team defense in = charity TD). In between that it was an absolute massacre. Montebello rocks you again next week.

Schurr has the advantage in all aspects. Flags or no flags! Schurr is faster, better coached, and just flat out a better team than BG. Beltran’s lancers have given up 120+ points and scored 17 points the past two years. That’s sad very sad…….. flags where not going to save the butt whooping to stop. Going into this week the BG faithful was hooting and hollering. Well what now ??? You’re in rebuilding mode ? Make all the excuses BG fans but Schurr is a better football program all around

From T. Peterson: In a 56-10 game? You’re talking about the referees? Are you kidding me? Also I’ve seen the stats. There were three times as many penalties on Schurr as there was BG.
