Apaches Dazed by Knights; Katella Wins 42-35

By Rich Whittington

(Arcadia) -The Arcadia Apaches outran, out passed, and outscored the visiting Katella Knights for the majority of their game Friday evening. However, when the contest was completed, it was the Knights that recorded a 42-35 overtime win in the second round of the CIF playoffs.

Arcadia got off to a fast start, scoring on their first possession when senior quarterback Max Davila found slot back Rolandiss Whitener for a 74 yard touchdown strike. Davila and Whitener would connect for two additional scores…for 40 and 41 yards, respectfully. Davila also connected with tight end James Gassner for a 43 yard scoring completion.

Also contributing to the Apache scoring barrage was junior Frankie Contreras, who scored on a 20 yard touchdown run. The remainder of the scoring was provided by kicker Randy Ludwig, who converted all five of his PAT attempts.

In contrast, Katella started slow, but refused to go away. Katella utilized a balanced attack, scoring three touchdowns through the air, and three TD’s on the ground. Senior quarterback Nathan Arrington connected with tight end Edward Williams for scores of 23 and 24 yards. Arrington also found John Guerra, another tight end, for a 24 yard scoring completion. The Knights ground scoring was provided by running back Joshua Cedillo, who scored on a 1 yard blast, and by Andrew Pisani, who scored on touchdown runs of 2 and 1 yards…the second of which was in the overtime period. The remainder of the Knights’ scoring came of the foot of sophomore Daniel Sifuentes, who converted five of his PAT attempts.

In the end, the difference was penalties. Arcadia was flagged 16 times, for a total of 134 yards. By contrast, Katella was flagged three times for 25 yards. This proved to be the Apaches’ downfall, as the penalties served to prolong several of the Knight scoring drives.

With the win, Katella (11-1) advances to the CIF Division 11 semi-finals, where they will meet the Rancho Mirage Rattlers. This contest is scheduled for 11/24/17. Kickoff is at 7:30 PM. Arcadia finishes the 2017 football season with a record of 8-4, second place in Pacific league play.

Head Coach blew this game. Team up three TD’s. Still up two touchdowns on Katella side of field and opt to go for it on 4th down, not close enough to run. Previous series they punted deep in Katella territory, this was the same scenario? Instead of Katella deep in our side of field down two TD’s, Arcadia GIFTS them a short field. Katella promptly scores TD, has all the momentum and proceeds to dominate rest of regular game play. With all this, Arcadia only needs a TD and extra point in OT to win. 1st and goal 6 Yardline, four runs to score TD? No, they pass to an injured WR who had no business being in the game, he drops ball. Next pass deflected, run for two yards, incomplete pass season over. Players played hearts out, HC, coaches let them down.
