"Have I got a public school for you!"

Good Evening!

T-Minus-150 Days until “The Mid Valley Classic”

It’s been a long time…

Best Facebook weekend status come from Christine Reed: “Just thinking maybe! Just maybe! The DODGERS could have spent some money on pitchers in the off season…”

Fast Note: A few of the top names have changed, but the three leading candidates for the Temple City job all meet Mid Valley Sports approval… Meaning the program and the school wins with any of the three.

(As if TCHS needs Mid Valley approval…but it doesn’t hurt.)

Interviews will be held this Friday and of course final approval rests with the school board.

The 2010 season can still be salvaged.

Last Add TC: The word given us is no less than 19 people tossed their names in the hat for the Home of the Camellias football HC gig.

Actually both the Jets and the Steelers won in the deal sending wide receiver Santonio Holmes to the Big Apple. Pittsburgh shaves its double headache down to one (the immaturity of Ben Roethlisberger) and New York gets an all pro talent who may have the light go on just in time to save his career.

Speaking about the light going on, on Saturday (after a very long and eventful week) the  incandescent bulb in my head clicked to life and gave me this;

Public football programs should start recruiting private school programs.

I know, I know, you’re not supposed to use the word “recruit”… Although private schools have been cherry-picking public schools for years with promises of better education, better athletic training, seamless transfers.

Local coaches have felt powerless, and I can understand why. Say Azusa unveils a tall freshman receiver with big mitts, and 4.4 speed. Well by kick-off time his sophomore season he’s at Amat or Serra.

(Of course at Serra, even the Nuns are fast)

With the economy struggling local coaches could find themselves with a unique opportunity to heist some talent out of the private programs.

First they need to label somebody as their Director of Recruitment…I mean, excuse me, Director of Acquisitions.

Second target their needs: Offensive linemen, quarterback, running back, linebacker…Check the newspapers, MaxPreps, word of mouth and build a roster of private school players to pursue.

Third make contact: Facebook, MySpace, text message, email…a concerned, uncle, cousin, or godfather.

Fourth set up a meeting: Meet the family. Present the family an academic profile for their son to follow. Share the success stories of players from your program making it to the college level, no matter how small the school. Explain the needs for your program, and then close the deal. Tell them its all, all, absolutely one hundred percent free. Share with them money they spend on a prep education, could better be spent not only for the student at the collegiate level but also on the current needs of the family.

Yeah, I think this can work. Just make the deal, save the dough.

On this date in history; The Civil War started, 149 years ago, when the South fired on Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor.

Speaking of which…a direct quote from a top line public high school quarterback three years ago to me was: “The Civil War, no they didn’t teach us that.”

On second thought…stay private.

Stay thirsty my friends…
