[Upland] Clark Phillips III picked off two passes to secure La Habra’s 21-14 victory over Upland Friday night at Upland High School.
La Habra quarterback Ryan Zanelli started off hot with two of his first three passes going for scores. Kristopher Koontz had the first touchdown on a 40-yarder to paydirt, Brandon Vasquez then took one in from 53-yards out to give the Highlanders an early 14-0 lead.
Upland’s Evan Rowe got the Scots on the board with his own 53-yarder hitting Donj’rael Brooks to make it 14-7 midway through the first quarter. The score stood that way until the half.
Midway through the third quarter Zanelli got his third touchdown pass of the night when he hit Vasquez in the corner of the endzone to make it 21-7.
Upland five star linebacker Justin Flowe went to the offensive side of the ball and pounded the rock in from 9-yards out to make it 21-14. Flowe finished with a dozen tackles and 5-carries for 41-yards and a TD.
Upland saw the red zone two more times but both times were stopped by Phillips interceptions.
Phillips III, a Ohio State commit at defensive back, finished with 3 catches for 26 yards and six tackles along with his two picks.
The Highlanders Zanelli went 13-25 for 178-yards and two touchdowns. Upland’s Rowe finished 10-22 for 109-yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.
La Habra (1-0) faces Redlands East Valley next week at home. Upland (0-1) stays home and faces Crenshaw.
