Thursday September 26
Pacific
Pasadena (3-1) at Burbank (2-3) (Burroughs)
Last Year: Burbank 52-14
While Pasadena is much improved from last year’s team it still comes into this game at 0-1 in the Pacific League and needs a victory to get back on track. Burbank is coming off a big win over Arcadia and although they are under .500 overall the Bulldogs played a brutal non league schedule. A win for either side will put them right in the mix for a run at the Pacific title. Like we saw last week against Crescenta Valley Pasadena is good but still not a top tier team in the Pacific. Burbank holds on and gets the W.
Burbank 31 Pasadena 27
Friday September 27
Pacific
Crescenta Valley (4-0) at Burroughs (5-0)
Last Year: Crescenta Valley 28-7
Everybody says Burroughs is overlooked. They might be right. The Indians are undefeated through five games and the offense is racking up big points. I guess it’s just a case of I’ll believe it when I see it. A win here would make me a believer. Crescenta Valley is always a contender in the Pacific. Last week the Falcons knocked off a solid Pasadena team. The only problem with Burroughs is that it plays in the Pacific where there are always 4 or 5 top tier teams. Crescenta Valley is one of those teams. CV wins the battle of the unbeatens.
Crescenta Valley 27 Burroughs 20
Non League
Nogales (0-4) at Rowland (3-1)
Last Year: Rowland 27-7
Nogales is still searching for its first win after four straight losses. The Nobles have already been shut out twice. Rowland has won three of its first four and are coming off a 22-14 win over Diamond Bar. Nogales may get a win eventually but it won’t be tonight. The Raiders move to 4-1.
Rowland 24 Nogales 7
Bonita (4-0) at Covina (2-2) (Covina District Field)
Last Year: Bonita 40-33
This was a great game last year. Bonita kept scoring but Covina just wouldn’t go away. This year is a little different. The Bearcats are rolling. They’re undefeated through four games and even though they struggled at times against San Dimas in the Smudge Pot, they still racked up 35 points. Covina fights but they just don’t have the horses (Colts?) to stay with Bonita. Bearcats improve to 5-0.
Bonita 38 Covina 17
La Serna (5-0) at Warren (3-1)
Last Year: Warren 47-46
This might be the game of the week. It was an absolute barn burner last year and this year should be no different. La Serna has won its first five games while Warren has stumbled just once – to an explosive Culver City team. The Lancers have taken some heat on the boards for “not playing anybody” but they’ve also wiped those teams out. They beat Colony, a team that is traditionally strong, by two touchdowns. A win here should silence the critics. Lancers avenge last year’s one point loss.
La Serna 35 Warren 31
Arroyo (2-2) at Monrovia (4-1)
This looked like a pretty good game…back in August. Since then Arroyo has suffered some key injuries and is coming off a 42-0 loss to Rio Hondo Prep. Monrovia on the other hand is feeling pretty good about things. The Wildcats have just one loss, to a Los Altos team that is 4-1 and just beat Northview. M-Town hit Covina for 42 last week and took care of defending CIF Champion South Hills the week before. Arroyo might hit on a couple of scores with its passing attack but this will be a Wildcat night. Cats roll.
Monrovia 35 Arroyo 13
Pomona (1-4) at San Dimas (2-2)
Back in the day a San Dimas-Pomona matchup was a common occurrence in the Valle Vista League. Not so much anymore. San Dimas is coming off of a thorough 33-6 win over Colton after falling to Bonita in the Smudge Pot. However even in that defeat the Saints rallied and gave the Bearcats all that they wanted. Pomona has just one victory, a 50-0 shutout of Jordan, but has struggled otherwise. This is a game the Saints should win. They stumbled in a similar game three weeks ago against Whittier but I don’t see that happening twice. Saints win in a tune up for league play.
San Dimas 28 Pomona 7
Pioneer (3-1) at La Canada (3-2)
Last Year: Pioneer 47-13
La Canada was cruising along until a meeting with Fillmore two weeks ago and ended up on the wrong side of a 48-0 beating. The Spartans followed that up with a 47-19 loss to South El Monte. Can LC bounce back against Pioneer? The Titans have just one loss, a thrashing by Pasadena, but have managed to win three out of four. It should be a low scoring slugfest with it coming down to a big defensive play. The Spartans come up with a key play in the fourth quarter and hold on for the win. They’ll pick up some momentum heading into Rio Hondo League play next week.
La Canada 20 Pioneer 14
Aroused Teetan, really puffing your chest aren’t cha? . C’mon back to the Del Rio league to see if can really compete. I think not
Friday nights, shut the F up. Something foul has always been happening. But now it’s foul when it’s happening at your expense. Shut up you bum. Take your lumps like a man and quit crying!!!
Easy week for the MVL rundown.
Arroyo will visit Monrovia on Friday. The knights are reeling after the infamous whooping they took at the hands of Rio Hondo Prep. Apparently the knights were short handed but even if they’re back to full strength it looks like a down year for the knights. Monrovia will win big. 42-14. The question and I think it’s a fair one is this the year Arroyo misses the playoffs ? Assuming EM runs through the league like we all expect. Rosemead looks to be improved Ostry and Campbell 1-2 punch. Gabrielino is improved albeit against suspect competition but they did hold the lead vs Sierra Vista until the final seconds. SEM becomes very interesting, talent wise The Eagles are Solid. Could Arroyo lose to anyone besides EM? I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say EM goes undefeated. SEM gets 2nd place (unless coaches screw up)
Rosemead and Arroyo battle for third place. This is the year Arroyo misses the cut!!!
I 100% agree with re-aligning the leagues. Glendal and Hoover doesn’t belong in the Pacific League for any sport and has been that way for many years now. The same goes to Mountain View in the Mission Valley.
I’ll always come back. Never make excuses for any loss. And here’s the kicker… I’ll always call how I see it. Right now there’s something foul happening in the MVL. No one speaks in it as a matter of fact the foulness is getting praised. It stinks! One thing all you posers can never call me is a liar! I come back win or lose. I give credit where credit is due. I gave major pops to Steven Navas Rosemead squad I also did the same for Sal Tovar’s SEM teams because they did it the right way. Win or lose they were home town Kids who bright it and that’s what the MVL is all about. This is rank if you ask me, This recruiting and housing players business. This post will probably get censored like my other posts. Aram Tolegian had a great podcast about this very issue. Some of you guys who say I’m just a hater or a bitter dude need to listen to it. Our great MVL is getting tainted. The neighborhood league one of the last of the Mohicans type league is fading. Call me what you want but facts are facts and it’s going on right before our eyes and nothing is being done about it. None the less the mighty knights will be present and prepared for you kitty kats. See you in a couple weeks.
I believe the Schurr DC is trying a new scheme this season, employing what’s known as the vacuum formation, in which each player is charged with finding where the ball is going….and then vacating that area to allow the offense maximum yardage. Thus, the opponent is virtually sucked toward the goal line. This scheme has really caught on, with Arroyo being the latest to embrace its merits.
That’s really sad about Glendale. I hope they don’t follow Hoover out the door. On the one hand, it’s easy to write them off as a lousy, irrelevant program, but it’s a very ominous sign for what is coming for the sport as a whole in the future.
At the very least, there needs to be some releaguing going on. A lot of teams are playing a lot of games that they just shouldn’t be playing, and that cannot help schools maintain interest in the sport.
That is the kind of coach Ramos is if he dont recruit he can’t win just like at BG. They had a run but I don’t see any Almont team doing anything special come playoffs good luck to all
I heard Glendale has decided to forfeit their game at Muir. Guess I would have done the same if I was a Pacific League team that lost to San Gabriel 33-8.
The Southern Section is planning a football summit to find ways of reversing the decline in participation. The keynote speaker will be Will Smith, who will be available afterward to sign copies of his movie ‘Concussion.’ No word yet on the venue for this event, but it’s thought that commissioner Wigod is leaning toward Pioneer High, because he’s read many times on this site that the Titans are rising.
What has happened to Schurr football. I mean in 5 games they have given up 200 points! And to nobodies. A Whittier High back shredded them for almost 500 yards, yep that is almost impossible right? Made his year in 20 minutes. Morningside a -44 rated team got 33 points. Andd…they have yet to play any squad with a plus ranking. I have heard of the No Name Defense but never The Invisible Defense. C’mon now!
Lol Sierra Vista calm down. Acting like you invented the wheel with those chrome helmets. Hilarious
Burbank game will not be that close.
CV cleans up against Burroughs. Will likely be over in the first half.
Take that to the bank.
@Anonymous I feel bad for the Arroyo kids they dont need the added bad attention FridayNights brings to them with his negative comments or discrediting he does of other teams.
@anonymous sorry to disappoint you, even when Arroyo losses FridayNights will still come on here and justify the loss. Then eventhough El Monte has a bye this week he will makeup some kind of lie or rant about something negative about them. Poor guy this is all he has, I promise you FridayNights in your next life you WILL make it in Football…lol
La serna @ warren this week…epic battle this Friday night! Gonna be a hard fought battle!
Very glad to see that Warren is in capable hands, and am looking forward to this matchup. I expect the Lancers to prevail, only because Pearson hasn’t had time to fully install his system, and the Whittier club wants revenge. By as early as next season, however, the Bears will be untouchable.
Down year for Arroyo or as the coach would say, “key injuries.” Right. Could this be an ongoing theme with EM bringing in transfers? Passing attack? Maybe to the other team. Dudes thrown more picks than TD passes.
Covina probably has the best chance to beat bonita of any team they’ve faced. Covina was up at halftime over Monrovia and gave them all they could handle for 3.5 quarters. If the colts can put it together against Bonita … watch out.
Pioneer in a cake walk. Titans want Sierra Vista. They’re on the clock.
Please Monrovia just beat The Hell out of Arroyo so We don’t hear that Idiot Friday Knights anymore.
