Relievers Victor Gonzalez and Blake Treinen just made Dodger manager Dave Roberts look like a genius. The Dodgers showed a lot of tenacity in coming back to win Game 5 of the World Series tonight after their ninth-inning meltdown in Game 4.
Personally, I think Dustin May should’ve been allowed to pitch to at least one more batter in the bottom of the eighth. But, thankfully, Gonzalez got two fly-ball outs to end the inning and preserve the Dodgers’ 4-2 lead over the Tampa Bay Rays.
Closer Kenley Jansen, who blew the save in Game 4, has been demoted at least for the time being, with Treinen recording the save against the Rays tonight.
I hope Roberts doesn’t resort to a “bullpen game” strategy for Game 6. Show some faith in Tony Gonsolin, who was pretty capable as a starting pitcher during much of the regular season.
Roberts has used his relievers a lot in the last couple of games, and I think that’s reason enough to give Gonsolin a real start here. I believe he could actually pitch L.A. to a Series-clinching victory.
If the Dodgers drop the next game, they’ll have Walker Buehler ready to start in a deciding Game 7. He dominated the Rays in Game 3.
