- Alabama routed Ohio St. 52-24 Monday night to win the National Championship. It was the seventh title for head coach Nick Saban, six with Alabama and one with LSU.

- The Las Vegas Raiders named former Chargers defensive coordinator Gus Bradley as their new DC.

- On the television broadcast of the Alabama-Ohio St. game Monday night Chris Fowler screamed “That’s a hat trick for Harris!” after Najee Harris scored a touchdown for Alabama. It was only the second touchdown of the night for Harris.
- Former Azusa Pacific forward Selom Mawugbe was drafted by the G League Warriors in the NBA G League draft.
- On this day in 1988 former Dodgers/ San Diego Padres first baseman Steve Garvey announced his retirement after 19 years.
- Also on this day in 1974 the Miami Dolphins beat the Minnesota Vikings 24-7 in Super Bowl VIII at Rice Stadium in Houston, Texas. Dolphins running back Larry Csonka was named MVP.
1-14-1951 – The first National Football League Pro Bowl All-Star Game was played in Los Angeles, CA.
I think that is more historical than some coach getting fired by a team, a very common occurrence.
