Jose Montes has just been hired as the new varsity baseball coach at Alhambra. Montes was the assistant coach for the Moors’ JV team during the 2021 season.

Alhambra High hasn’t yet named a successor for baseball coach Steve Gewecke, who stepped down at the end of the 2021 season. Gewecke led the AHS varsity to 11 Almont League championships and a total of 427 victories during his 25 seasons as head coach.
Gewecke’s 2012 team won a league title and advanced all the way to the Division 3 championship final at Dodger Stadium, where the Moors lost to Bonita High.

@ Anonymous: I don’t think Alhambra High has chosen a new head baseball coach yet, but I’d be glad to let everyone know as soon as that position gets filled.

Just to provide a little more clarity on this thread, Alhambra’s football program has been back since 2018. We had an 8-2 record that year and got within one defensive stop of a league co-championship and a playoff spot. Then, in 2019, the Moors went 12-1, winning the Almont League title and making it all the way to the Division 13 semifinals.
In 2020-21, we played only one game, which we lost by a single point. (We’d scheduled two opponents, but what was supposed to be our first game fell through because someone on the other side tested positive for Covid-19.)
We hope to play a full slate of games in the late summer and fall. If we can do that, then we should be able to find out whether the program is reasonably close to where it was in late 2019, before the pandemic struck.

Alhambra almost made it back in 2016, when the Moors got to the playoffs despite a 5-5 regular-season record. We secured a playoff spot with a third-place finish in the Almont League and then were knocked out by Santa Ana in the first round.
AHS came excruciatingly close to going 8-2 during that regular season; we lost to three nonleague opponents (Western, Rowland, and South Pasadena) by a total of three points apiece. We had an excellent ground game with running backs Salman Gurung and Lu-Ring Paialii, and our defense was pretty good. Unfortunately, our passing attack was subpar in 2016.
Lu-Ring then transferred out, which didn’t help us the next season, when we went 4-5. We could’ve used his power running.

Alhambra had a good program but the transition after gil was bad they went to Lou and it started going sideways and next coach after that was bad and it went downhill after that

@ Clos: Mike Mackintosh has been an outstanding offensive coordinator for several years, and he’s been pulling double duty as our equipment guy since midway through the 2019 season. He’s an extremely valuable part of the Alhambra coaching staff; the program would definitely not be the same without him.
Your chronology is just a little off there. It’s actually been 20 months (not quite two years) since the end of the 2019 season, and we’ve played a grand total of one game in the meantime. Excuse me for reminding everyone that we were on a very nice run until the pandemic screwed things up for all of us. I’ve mentioned it here on a couple or three occasions in all this time, and I’ve done that partly for the benefit of people like yourself who’ve either forgotten or would prefer to rewrite history.
If I’m living in the past, it’s a recent, highly successful past that we might still be able to build on despite the interruptions caused by our current public health emergency. And, I’ve always been more eager to see how the future unfolds.
Coach Mac and Coach Bergstrom are working with a new quarterback, Michael Gonzalez, who looked pretty good in his one game last spring. I hope Michael takes full advantage of the opportunity that his predecessor voluntarily left behind when he decided to transfer out.
Our coaches have always tried to build an entire team in every sense of the word. They have never deviated from that philosophy.

AUSD could care less about football at their three high schools. Pretty sure there are no former players or coaches on the school board.

@ FBFan: Some good things are finally happening with the football (and soccer) facility at Moor Field. New goalposts have been put up, it looks like the scoreboard has been worked on, and a new grass playing surface is being installed. (More than half of the new sod is already in, and with some reasonably good luck, the field should be ready in time for Alhambra’s opening game on Aug. 20.)
The team is out on the school’s practice field right now, getting ready for that season opener.
Coach Bergstrom and his assistants deserve the recognition that you’re giving them; they’ve put in countless hours and their hard work has really paid off during the last three years. The Moors have won 20 of their last 24 games, capturing the Almont League title in 2019 after just missing a co-championship the previous year.
We were able to play only one game during the last school year because of the pandemic, but we’re looking forward to a full slate of games during the late summer and fall. I’m optimistic that Alhambra will be ready to play.

Speaking of Almont, Eric Bergstrom is a very underrated coach! Very little support from the district at Alhambra makes you wonder if they even want a football team. But he still always finds a way to get his team to compete.

The almont runs through montebello. Schurr is fine with being ok Ramos isn’t an elite coach that you need at a school like schurr but he keeps them completing. The wild card in the almont is Alhambra they have produced some good players recently but they have transferred out interesting to see what they have left

Has anyone seen any of the Almont league throw this year? Seems like they have been M.I.A!
From T. Peterson: I’ve seen Schurr and Bell Gardens. Schurr didn’t look too bad. BG looked ok.
