Spann for Three in Vikings Win

(El Monte) – Mountain View running back Xavier Spann ran for three scores in the Vikings 39-28 victory over Azusa Thursday night at Viking Stadium.

View got on the board on its first drive when Spann got in the end zone for the first time from 12-yards out, making it 6-0 after a missed extra point.

The Vikings scored again late in the first quarter this time it was Brandon Cornejo on a two-yard dive and again the extra point was missed making the score 12-0.

The Aztecs got on board on their first play of the second quarter when quarterback Nathan Noguez kept it himself from 10-yards to make it 12-7.

View made it a two score lead again as this time quarterback Enriquez Ochoa pounded it in from two yards out making it 20-7 after a successful two point conversion.

Azusa didn’t waste anytime getting on the board in the second half when Jeremiah Potter look the second half kickoff to paydirt and cut the lead to 20-14.

That score wouldn’t hold for long as Spann broke one for a 79-yard burst through the Azusa defense and into the end zone. After a Aztecs fumble, Spann scored for the third time – this one from three yards out making it 32-14.

The Aztecs scored again on a four-yard Julian Estrada run.

The Vikes kept it on the ground and Cornejo got in the end zone again making it 39-22 with just over five minutes left.

Azusa lit up the board one last time late in the fourth quarter when Noguez found a wide open Estrada in the corner of the end zone for the final score of the game.

Spann had 11-carries for 209-yards and three touchdowns, after the game Spann said “We’re out here to win and that’s all that matters to me and my team.”

Cornejo finished with 27-carries for 172-yards and two scores. Victor Espinoza had a solid night for the Vikings on defense with a pair of sacks.

Martin Cueva led the Aztecs with 99-yards rushing on nine carries while Estrada had 104 total yards and two scores.

Mountain View (2-2) will stay home and face League rivals Rosemead while Azusa will travel to Glendale and face the Nitros.

    Nice to see MV have a bit of success this season, something to build on.
