Hernandez, Rodriguez En Fuego! Wildcats Roll

Carlos Hernandez had a huge night for Monrovia

By Tim Peterson

(Monrovia) – Noah Rodriguez threw four touchdown passes, all to Carlos Hernandez, to lead Monrovia to a 36-17 win over San Dimas Friday night on the Saints home field.

San Dimas was up 7-6 after the first quarter but Monrovia took the lead for good in the second quarter and never looked back. It all started and ended with the duo of Hernandez and Rodriguez. Hernandez hauled in 14 catches for 256 yards and four touchdowns. Rodriguez completed 22 of 32 for 373 yards the four scores.

Rodriguez and Hernandez hooked up on the first possession. On Monrovia’s third play from scrimmage Rodriguez three a pass over the middle that Hernandez grabbed and turned into a 65-yard catch and carry for a touchdown. A missed extra point left the Wildcats up 6-0.

San Dimas took it’s only lead of the night on its next series. The Saints marched 56 yards on 11 plays. Jesse Samec finished it with an eight -yard run for a 7-6 led. That was the last time Monrovia trailed.

The Saints had a couple of opportunities to score again after that but turned it over twice. San Dimas quarterback Teyondre Coleman was picked off by Traveon Young on the next series. Then on the following possession San Dimas fumbled at the Monrovia nine yard line after a hard hit and the Wildcats took over.

In the second quarter Rodriguez hit Hernandez with a 23-yard touchdown strike to cap 73-yard drive with 6:34 left to make it 13-7.

The big two struck again with 1:34 left in the half as Rodriguez hit Hernandez for a 13-yard touchdown pass in the corner of the end zone.

With 19 seconds left in the half Mathis Uribe kicked a 39-yard field goal for San Dimas. Monrovia took a 21-10 advantage into the half.

Monrovia picked up right where it left off in the third quarter. The Wildcats started at their own 15 and drive right down the field. Hernandez caught an 18-yard pass from his partner Rodriguez for a score and a 28-10 lead.

San Dimas was forced to punt on its next two possessions in the third quarter and that was all she wrote.

The Cats added another score in the fourth quarter on a 13-yard touchdown run by Jacob Calnon.

Coleman scored on a three-yard run with just over two minutes left for San Dimas for the 36-17 final.

Samec rushed for 114 yards on 12 carries for San Dimas as the Saints rushed for over 200 yards overall. But on this night they were overmatched by Monrovia’s passing attack or more specifically by two guys named Rodriguez and Hernandez.

“Those two guys are on the same page. Number 9 (Rodriguez) is the best quarterback in the area and number 7 (Hernandez) is the best receiver in the area. No doubt,” said San Dimas head coach Mark Holman. “That’s tough to defend.”

“Carlos has great hands and is a playmaker and Noah puts the ball in the right place” said Monrovia head coach Chris Williams.

Monrovia improved to 5-0 with the victory while San Dimas dropped to 4-2.

No excuses, the SD turnover in the red zone totally changed the game. It started to look like a classic Monrovia – San Dimas match up but that ended after the turnover. Monrovia was too much, I wish them luck in the playoffs. And Tim great story! However sometimes I like my mothers basement it’s where I keep all my tools…..
