Alhambra Falls to Trinity Classical Academy, 50-33

By Ron Vrooman

(Alhambra) – The Alhambra Moors, who gave up 28 points during a disastrous first quarter, went down to a 50-33 defeat at the hands of the visiting Trinity Classical Academy Knights last Friday evening.

The Knights’ quarterback, Wil Jackson, completed 24 of 41 passes for 250 yards and three touchdowns, and he ran for two additional scores. Slot receiver A.J. Horning made 10 catches for a total of 101 yards and set up Trinity’s first touchdown with a 54-yard return of the opening kickoff.

Nick Parrinello also played a key role in the Knights’ first-quarter scoring outburst, which gave them a 28-6 lead. Parrinello returned a blocked punt 17 yards for a touchdown and later raced 60 yards for another TD after recovering a fumble by Alhambra quarterback Michael Gonzalez.

Jackson threw two of his scoring passes in the second quarter to give Trinity a 44-12 halftime lead. The Moors outscored the Knights, 21-6, in the second half, but that effort was too little, too late.

Junior tailback Erick Baray led Alhambra’s offense, carrying the ball 25 times for 168 yards and four touchdowns. Gonzalez, who has passed for more than 1,000 yards this season, connected on nine of 20 throws for 110 yards and a last-minute score.

Trinity, which improved its record to 4-1, gained 310 yards from scrimmage, while Alhambra finished with 389 total yards.

The Moors, who dropped to 1-4 on the season, will host the Mark Keppel Aztecs in their Almont League opener this Friday night.
