Matadors Hold off Oilers

By George Hernandez

(San Gabriel) – San Gabriel running back Robert Lucero had three scores in the first half leading the way to the Matadors 42-28 victory over Montebello Thursday night at San Gabriel high school.

The Matadors night didn’t start off good fumbling the ball right over to the Oilers on their first play.

Montebello wasn’t able to do much and was forced to punt on three and out.

San Gabriel was pinned back inside its 10-yard line but Lucero bounced a pitch outside and took it 91-yards to paydirt to make it 8-0 after big Efren Torres took in the two point conversion.

The Oilers we’re forced to punt again and what looked like San Gabriel calling a fair catch turned into a 70-yard punt return touchdown by Ivan Can making it 14-0 after a missed two point conversion.

Can wasn’t done as a few plays later he picked off a Michael Valle pass and took it 35-yards to the end zone to make it 22-0 after another Torres two point conversion.

The Matadors weren’t done in the first quarter. Torres scored from two yards out and Lucero hit the two point conversion putting it at 30-0 with three minutes left in the first quarter.

After a Montebello fumble, its  third straight possession with a turnover, Lucero scored for the second time of the night from six yards out to make it 36-0 one play into the second quarter.

San Gabriel then recovered an onside kick but turned the ball over on downs.

The Oilers didn’t turn it into points instead threw their third interception of the night this time to Tijani Daley.

The Matadors converted the turnover into points with Lucero’s third score of the night a one yard dive making it 42-0.

Montebello got on the board late in the half with a six yard run by Enrique Hidalgo putting the score at 42-7 at half after the teams exchanged punts.

Both teams exchanged punts again to begin the second half and then the Oilers went to work, shutting down the Matadors offense.

Montebello scored twice in the third quarter on passes from Michael Valdivia to Bryant Murillo and Anthony Patel.

The score was 42-21 after three quarters of play.

After forcing three straight punts the Oilers forced a turnover on downs and turned it into points when Raul Gonzalez pounded it in from three yards out to make it 42-28 with eight minutes left.

Montebello got another punt and drove down field and fumbled it going into the end zone from five yards out.

San Gabriel went on to run out the clock.

Matadors quarterback Jacob Muniz went 6 of 10 for 111-yards. Lucero had 182-yards on 31-carries.

Valdivia, who went in after Valle’s horrible start, went 18 for 24 for 250-yards and two touchdown passes and an interception. Patel and Murillo combined for 175-yards receiving and two scores.

San Gabriel now 6-0 will face Mark Keppel while the Oilers (1-5) will stay on the road and head to Bell Gardens.

    NWO?
Are you really puffing your chest? The last ten years you guys were 0-9 against MHS! Get it together! Lets see if you guys can really make a good season. I’m not talking crap but your team is very mediocre at best. If Montebello plays a decent 1st qtr this game is totally different. Anyways, I’m glad that your team is doing well. It’s been a decade or so…. Good Luck….
