- On this day in 1988 an injured Kirk Gibson came off the bench to hit a dramatic two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning at Dodger Stadium to give the Dodgers a 5-4 win over the Oakland A’s in Game 1 of the World Series. The Dodgers went on to win the series in five games.
