(La Canada) – The Loyola Cubs edged the host St. Francis Golden Knights Friday evening, 6-3, in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd at Jim Bonds Stadium, on the campus of St. Francis High School.

Both Loyola and St. Francis have proven to be proficient scorers, averaging nearly 35 points per game during the 2021-’22 season. This was not the case Friday night as the teams combined for a total of nine points in total scoring.

St. Francis scored the first points of the evening. After holding Loyola to a three and out on the games opening possession, the Golden Knights moved the ball 48 yards on three offensive plays, setting up a 25-yard field goal attempt for Clint Geryak. The kick was successful, making the score 3-0, St. Francis, with 6:00 remaining in the opening quarter of play.

The score remained the same until late in the third quarter, when Loyola’s Mark Hyan converted a 31-yard field goal to tie it at 3 with 2:27 remaining in the third quarter.

St. Francis attempted to take the lead at the mid point of the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, a 35-yard Geryak kick hit the upright and bounced back out into the field of play. Loyola took possession on their own 30 yard line, and moved the ball down to the St. Francis 4, where Hyan attempted, and converted, a 21- yard field goal. This made the score 6-3, Loyola, as the game came to a close.

With the win, Loyola improves to 7-2, 2-0 in Angelus League play. St. Francis drops to 6-2, 1-1 in league.

St. Francis finishes out their regular season on 10/29/21, when they travel to Crespi to play the Celts. Loyola’s final regular season contest is also scheduled for 10/29/21, when the Cubs will host the St. Paul Swordsmen. Kickoff for both games is at 7:00 p.m.
