Cougars Start Fast to Finish Biola

(Glendora) – Azusa Pacific jumped out to a 21-4 lead and never relinquished the advantage in a 68-55 win over Biola Saturday night at Felix Event Center.

Justin Hemsley knocked down a pair of threes in the early run and the Cougar defense put the clamps on Biola in building the 17 point lead.

Biola cut the lead to 26-18 with the 6:03 left in the first half behind sharp shooting of guard Chris Rossow.

Biola then got to within six before before McKelary Robertson went on his own personal 8-0 run for the Cougars.

He buried two threes from way downtown and then hit a pair of free throws to put the Cougars up 32-20.

APU then opened the lead back up to 40-25 at halftime. Robertson led the Cougars with 13 in the first half and Hemsley had 11 including three from beyond the arc.

Rossow had 11 for Biola but no other Eagle was in double figures.

The two teams played it nearly even through the first 8 minutes of the second half. The Cougars led 52-38 with 11:57 left.

The Eagles were never able to get the lead under 12 as the Cougars continued to keep them at bay and cruised to the 13 point victory.

Robertson and Hemsley combined for 37 points with Hemsley leading the team with 20. Hemsley was 7 of 13 from the floor as he went 3 of 5 from three point range. Hemsley also pulled down five rebounds.

The Cougars hit 12 from three point land overall as Ben Avera and Trevon Ary-Turner each hit two and finished with six points each.

Rossow led all scorers with 21 for Biola, Michael Bagatourian scored 14 and Alex Wright put in 13. The Eagles started off cold and finished shooting just 34 percent from the field compared to 40 percent for Azusa Pacific.

Biola suffered only its second loss of the season falling to 8-2. The Cougars improved to 5-4.

    Northview lost its state title game to Cathedral Sacred Heart last night, 48-29. I thought the no-comment thing applied only to Mater Dei’s postgame policy, but apparently this site is crickets too.
