Vikings Knocked out of State

(Covina) – Fontana went on an 8-0 run in the first quarter to grab a 16-9 lead, led 21-11 after one and never looked back in a 50-43 win over Northview Tuesday night in the CIF State Regional playoffs.

Sergio Avalos and Jesus Avalos each hit two threes in the quarter as Fontana built the ten-point advantage. Sergio Avalos had five more in the second quarter including another three, By the time the first half buzzer sounded Fontana was up 35-19.

The Vikings never did find a rhythm in the contest. They scored just eight points in the second and third quarters. Sam Alvarez hit a three pointer in the third but Northview was outscored 9-8 in the quarter. Fontana cooled off but the Vikes couldn’t take advantage and trailed by 17 after three.

The Steelers led by as many as 22 points in the final frame before Northview cut into the lead late but still fell short by 13.

Sergio Avalos scored a game high 17 for Fontana including five threes, and Esteban Perez, the Steelers big man inside, had 16. Joshua Okoluabo added 10.

For Northview Emilio Peruchco led the team with 12 points, Sam Osi had 9 and Alvarez finished with 8. The Vikings were 2 for 16 from three-point land.

Northview finished the season with an overall record of 19-13. Fontana, now 26-5 advances to the next round of State.
