Gonzalez Jr. Leaving Montebello for McKendree University

Pete Gonzalez Jr. is heading for McKendree University to join their coaching staff

By Tim Peterson

(Montebello) – Pete Gonzalez Jr. who has been the offensive coordinator at Montebello for the last 13 years, is leaving the school to become the running backs coach at McKendree University, a Division 2 college in Lebanon, Illinois.

Gonzalez Jr. coached under his dad, Pete Gonzalez, at St. Paul for three years before they both moved on to Montebello with Gonzalez Jr. as OC and Gonzalez as HC.

“I’m excited. I sent my resume over there after I found out they were looking through a contact my dad had,” Gonzalez said. “The coach interviewed me over the phone, the OC interviewed me a couple of days later and now I’m coaching there. Pretty crazy and fast.”

Gonzalez will leave next week for McKendree and will be there for Spring practice.

“I spent a lot of years at Montebello but I’m excited to get there,” Gonzalez added.

A longtime Del Rio League assistant at Whittier and Cal will be taking over the offense for Montebello HS.

The majority of their offense were juniors. QB is small but smart, RB is a tank, nothing fancy, straight ahead. They do lack size and a go to receiver, but they return a good amount of kids that went to the 2nd round in 2021. So why not SG?

Love to see the matadors in the conversation, do you have any reasoning to your prediction NWO (aside from the steady coaching slightly upward trend). Would love to hear of a key player or strong class coming out of San Gabriel

All you have to do now is interview well and not come off like a know-it-all. College coaching fraternity takes care of their own.

There goes Montebello. Little Pete was the backbone of that program. Now that he is gone so will the chance of them competing regularly. He was at one point calling both the offense and defense.

This changes the balance of power in the Almont to the point where the Kremlin has taken notice.
