Game Night: Week 2

Daniel Astorga and the undefeated South Hills Huskies face Northview at Covina District Field Friday Night.

All kickoffs are at 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise indicated

Thursday September 1

Monrovia (2-0) at El Rancho (2-0)

Good game to find out where you’re at. El Rancho is 2-0 but the combined records of the Dons two opponents, Don Lugo and Bell Gardens, is 0-4. I think I know where Monrovia is. The Wildcats are good. We knew that when they beat Bonita in overtime in Zero Week and then followed that up with a blow out win over Arcadia last week. El Rancho will give the Cats fits and battle them early but Monrovia will be too much as the game goes along. Who’s going to cover Carlos Hernandez and Jaylen Moore? Monrovia goes to 3-0.

Monrovia 35 El Rancho 17

Pasadena (1-1) at Damien (1-1)

Both teams bounced back with a win after losing in Zero Week. Pasadena got on track with 35 points in a win over Glendora while Damien routed Loyola. Pasadena is good and again, as has been stated numerous times, will run right through the Pacific. However you still have to wonder if the Bulldogs are at a level with a team like Damien yet. We’ll find out Thursday night. Damien wins…close.

Damien 24 Pasadena 21

Alhambra (1-1) at Temple City (1-0)

A win over Alhambra would be huge for Temple City. To start 2-0 with a win over a solid opponent would give the Rams a lot of confidence going forward. The Moors bounced back with a victory over Glendale after falling to South El Monte. Temple City is improved and will be in the game in the fourth quarter, but in the end Alhambra comes away with the win.

Alhambra 21 Temple City 14

St Pius X (2-0) at St. Paul (2-0)

Another good early season matchup. St. Paul is coming off a 37-0 shutout of Huntington Park and has scored 72 points in its first two games. St. Pius X blanked Muir last week 35-0 and the Warriors have outscored their first two opponents 76-3. Both teams have solid quarterbacks in St. Paul’s Andrew Maushardt and Dieter Barr at St. Pius X. Should be a shootout with both of these guys throwing the ball all over the lot. St. Paul is the last team standing.

St. Paul 38 St. Pius X 35

Friday September 2

Glendora (0-2) at Charter Oak (1-0)

Glendora has a schedule that can only be described as a death march. The Tartans are still looking for their first win after falling to Pasadena last week. It won’t get any easier this week. Charter Oak has an explosive offense similar to Pasadena’s. Quarterback Richie Munoz is the real deal. The Chargers are susceptible to the run and if the Tartans can pound it they can keep it close. Charter Oak emerges with the victory.

Charter Oak 28 Glendora 14

Rosemead (0-1) at San Marino (1-1)

Rosemead gave up 56 points to La Canada in Zero Week while San Marino is coming off a one-point win over Arroyo with a touchdown in the last ten seconds. The Titans defense played well too in the win. They have enough to get the win here. Titans win their second straight.

San Marino 21 Rosemead 13

Schurr (0-2) at Arroyo (0-2)

Both teams need a win. Schurr and Arroyo have both lost heartbreakers and have both been blown out once. Defense figures to be the key here. If either team had made just one more stop they would be 1-1 right now. Flipping a coin would probably be the easiest way to determine the winner in this one. Schurr makes a late stop and holds on in the fourth.

Schurr 20 Arroyo 17

South Hills (2-0) at Northview (1-1) (Covina District Field)

Northview rushed for over 300 yards in a 38-24 loss to Charter Oak last Thursday night. If the Vikings can establish the running attack again they should be fine against South Hills. The Huskies offense isn’t nearly as dynamic as the Chargers and Northview did shut down Muir on opening night. Northview runs over South Hills.

Northview 27 South Hills 17

Your right those kids were trying to make a better future for them selves and bassett didn’t like it and forced them to play at bassett and i’ve been to the games at bassett and let me tell you it was basically those kids trying to transfer versus the other team, those kids were even calling there own plays i believe because the coaching was horrible. Shameful on bassetts program and district on the way they treat these kids , they should honestly shut down the school already

So he’s there to turn a team around that has made three straight playoff appearances, two of those league titles, has seven playoff wins in that time. When he has 0? I believe had an identical record last year with them well at Bassett. I could tell you the exact reason he’s there and you’re wrong.

Basset has proved they dont care . If Basset cared they would have hired an experience coach with some success. Or college graduate who played in college

Football! Spathias , I suggest because I know him well, did not switch schools for higher salary. Hector is fine economically and actually , I think, don;t need ten thousand dollar increase! He is now at EM for one reason! The challenge to try to turn another loser into a winning program. He and staff (not sure if whole staff is still together) done this twice at similar level programs. So please realize Spathias is very good at coaching . So is staff. He is a ‘real coach’, with true tendencies that make programs change= keeping great staff, hard work, gets along with teenagers really good. Divides labor of position coaching and O and D and special teams great

Exactly right Bassett barely has about 18 players on varsity the kids are playing iron man football and out if the 18 a couple of them are freshman that dress and don’t play the coaches are terrible so makes sense as to what is bassett thinking about player safety.

What croc! Kids can’t buy booze and you want to adhere to some silly contract. How is it fair if a school like Bassett continues to invest so little in the football program that it endangers the well being of an athlete (child) that athlete still has to stay there and what, suck it up? These kids should absolutely have the choice to move into a school that values football over a school that clearly doesn’t. It’s not like they went from Bassett to Amat they went to EM where conditions are just a tad better and the comfort of playing for coaches who they know can help evolve into men. As for following a coach rule. Dumbest rule on the books. But hey do what ever the hell you want!

Kids that follow there coach should not be cleared. Shame on Spathais for trying that. He left Bassett for a better paying school. Build within your program. I hope the returning Bassett players play for Bassett. I drove by Bassett last week saw there 11 players on field and maybe 5 kids on sideline sitting on bench probaly exhausted.

You are correct, Schurr has beaten Arroyo. The last time Schurr beat Arroyo was 1980 (40-0) They have played about 10 times since 1980.including playoff games. Maybe Itso would have been correct to say Schurr hasn;t beaten Arroyo since before current players parents were born

La Mirada is pretty good. They sound very tough with the motto”We are not afraid of anybody, any team any time”. But Mater Dei, Servite tough? The motto is fine so long as the coaches line up against these elite players that are trying to get noticed by Lou Saban and want to take your head off. But they don’t. Instead they put their boys out there game after game after game against superior talent to prove how fearless they are. Last season La Mirada lost to Mayfair and El Toro so lets be real. I hope these Catholic teams are praying for La Mirada but I doubt it.

Santa Fe v San Dimas maybe the most competitive game of the Del Rio league teams. Both have under performed but can be better. El Rancho v Monrovia next but these kind of speedy athletic teams always give the Dons fits. The Dons will stay close for awhile but Monrovia will keep firing away and eventually to much fire power will make El Rancho wilt as most teams will against Monrovia. La Serna, Whittier and Cal should all put a running clock on their foes. BTW the SFV is already cancelling some games this week because of the heat. Could happen in SGV also. PC you know.
