There are times in a football program’s history it decides to take on a challenge to see where they measure up against some of the best competition. That’s just what the Bishop Amat Lancers did Friday night hosting the #1 team in the country, the St. John Bosco Braves. The matchup showed Bishop Amat has a little way to go falling 42-7 to the loaded St. John Bosco team.

The Braves wasted no time getting going, driving 60-yards on 10 plays with Cameron Jones battering his way across the goal line from one yard out. Marcus Lee added the extra point.

The Braves only needed two plays on their next possession to get to paydirt. After a penalty pushed them back to their own ten, Brave quarterback Pierce Clarkson found Eric Denham deep down the field for 90-yards and the score. With Lee’s extra point the Brave advantage was now 14 with 4:01 left in the opening quarter.

While the Braves were finding success on offense, the Lancers struggled throughout the first half getting their 1st first down on their third series.

On the other side the Braves were almost scoring at will adding three more scores before the end of the half. Touchdown runs of 42 yards for Jones, 64-yards by Chauncey Sylvester and 32-yards by Clarkson.

The Bishop Amat defense buckled down in the second half allowing only one touchdown to the Braves on a 27-yard pass from Caleb Sanchez to Kyngston Villiamu-Asa. Sanchez came in on relief for Clarkson.

The Lancers managed to find some offensive traction late in the contest. A 12-play 80-yard drive was capped on a one yard pass from Richie Munoz to Julien Lopez. Isaac Ochoa added the extra point for the final points on the night for Bishop Amat.

Munoz connected on 12 of 28 passes for 115 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Munoz was also the Lancers leading rusher with 31 yards.

While the contest was one sided, the defeat let the Lancers know where they can improve if they want to get back on the national stage of high school football.

@ Bottom Line: Hence games such as Mater Dei vs. Bishop Gorman of Las Vegas, NV. I agree that all of these high-rolling and heavily bankrolled teams should be in their own separate leagues and divisions.

@ Question Mark: If I understand your question correctly, Bishop Amat is located in La Puente. USC and Rams quarterback Pat Haden and USC wide receiver J.K. McKay (Coach John McKay’s son) were teammates there in the late 1960’s/early ’70’s.

@ NWO: Having that landmark business run an ad in Alhambra’s game night program would be more like it. The Hat regularly placed ads in the baseball team’s yearbook/media guide, so it’s no stranger to supporting the AHS athletic program.
By the way, The Hat’s pastrami sandwiches are “World Famous,” you know. I happen to like them myself; their roast beef sandwiches and fries are good, too.

The problem with programs such as Bosco and Mater Dei is that they are all-star squads that practice year-round, making them practically unbeatable by lesser private programs, and entirely out of reach from the teams that actually represent their communities. I’ve truly had enough of these over-sized, over-hyped supermen programs. The Trinity league was partitioned from the rest of the section for a reason, which suggests that those six schools should only play themselves, or else strictly out-of-state opponents who operate on similar grandstanding principles.

Hey Ron, wouldn’t a patch with The Hat logo look sweet on the Moors jerseys?

Yeah, St. John Bosco, the professional high school football team of Los Angeles County.
There needs to be a ban on corporate sponsorships for individual teams. If CIF needs the outside financial support from entities such as Ford Motor Company to remain afloat, that’s one thing, but corporations shouldn’t be bankrolling the athletic programs at favored schools.
