Game Night: Week 3

Quarterback Daniel Andrade leads Bonita into the Smudge Pot Saturday night against San Dimas (Photo by Doug Brown)

All kickoffs are at 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise indicated:

Thursday September 8

Downey (2-1) at California (2-1)

Good for Cal for scheduling up but this will be a tough hill to climb. Downey lost its first game to Corona del Mar but then took care of El Toro and Jurupa Hills with relative ease. Cal is a good team and the Condors have shown that winning two of their first three games. But they’re not on the level of Downey. Vikings win handily.

Downey 42 California 13

Friday September 9

Baldwin Park (3-0) at Schurr (1-2)

Baldwin Park has been impressive. Drew Knight and the offense are rolling. Schurr’s defense came to play last week in a shutout of Arroyo. The Spartans will need more of that this week. They make some stops at times but the Braves offense will be hard to hold down all night. Baldwin Park moves to 4-0.

Baldwin Park 28 Schurr 17

Covina (0-2) at Northview (2-1) (Covina District Field)

This isn’t the start that Covina new head coach Aaron Berry was looking for. A tough loss to South Hills and a loss to Diamond Bar has the Colts searching for answers. Northview lost once- to a good Charter oak team- but bounced back last week in style by routing the same South Hills team that Covina just lost to. Northview has the advantage here. Vikes get the W.

Northview 35 Covina 14

Monrovia (3-0) at Ayala (3-0)

This is the game of the week. A good chance for both unbeaten teams to see where they’re at. Monrovia is on a roll dropping 58 on El Rancho last week. The Wildcats are averaging over 47 points per game. Ayala scored 40 on Leuzinger last week and is off to a great start. It should be back and forth. Both teams can score. On this night Monrovia scores more.

Monrovia 38 Ayala 35

Temple City (1-1) at Mt. View (2-1)

Temple City has split its first two games and hung with Alhambra last week before falling 21-6. Mt. View lost its opener but rebounded to beat Gladstone and Workman the last two weeks. Temple City has had some firepower offensively and has a nice receiver in Judah Douglas. The Rams have enough for the win here.

Temple City 24 Mt View 13

Chino Hills (3-0) at Charter Oak (2-0)

This may be the second best game of the week. Charter Oak’s offense is fine. Richie Munoz and company have it going on. The run defense was a concern after the win over Northview but the Chargers improved in that area and rose to the occasion last week in a win over Glendora. Chino Hills has been dominant in its last two victories but struggled to beat Glendora in the opener 13-7 while the Chargers laid the wood to the Tartans last week 37-7. Chino Hills will have trouble stopping Charter Oak’s offense. The Chargers win their third straight.

Charter Oak 31 Chino Hills 21

Loyola (1-1) at Pasadena (2-1)

Good win for Pasadena last week. A win over a quality opponent like Damien, especially after being down by two scores showed a lot. The Bulldogs will have to do it again this week. Loyola lost to that same Damien team 34-7 before rebounding to beat Culver City. The Bulldogs are at full strength now and are beginning build confidence. Also they have a really challenging schedule. They get the win.

Pasadena 31 Loyola 15

Saturday September 10

San Dimas (2-1) vs. Bonita (1-2) (Citrus College) Smudge Pot

One of the best rivalries in the area will be renewed Saturday night in the famed Smudge Pot. Bonita has started off slow losing two of its first three including last week to La Salle. San Dimas has won two of three including a 33-0 blanking of Santa Fe last week. It should come down to the wire. The Saints make a big play in the end to hold on.

San Dimas 31 Bonita 28

    IMO,

Here we go, La Serna v the World. Stop it! The one time they don’t do a match up write up on La Serna and you are already throwing a fit, calling it a snub. Not all games get a weekly write up, guy. Just go to the game without any expectation of a score and enjoy it.

I finally figured out why you keep hating on “get back coaches”.

@SEMEAGLES all of a sudden SEM wants to come on here and talk trash. WTH you talking about. Every team has a down year, but Arroyo has always done good and found ways to improve and win throughout the seasons. Unlike other team who just plain are not that good for many seasons like SEM for example. You guy have been trash for a long time, and now all of a sudden you win some preseason game and you want to bash Arroyo cause they are still figuring thing out GET OUT OF HERE. Im a Arroyo parent and I’m happy for Mount view Vikings having success early on and do you hear them on here putting another team down NO.

SEM Is a young team and like that one person said “trying to find their identity” but I tell you what … with that much talent on the team their identity isn’t the wing-T.
Just cause Gallardo came from la serna where they ran it , doesn’t mean this program will be as successful, south needs a change quick , or else that young talent might be looking for a new home.
And that one person that said the arroyo program is trash , that’s not true buddy , they’ve been solid for years … their coaches are just know it all gurus , who need to humble themselves …. Bunch of Al bundy’s

There’s a chance Monrovia can beat Ayala. It’s a small chance INHO. Ayala by 17 sounds about right.
For CO and CH, the team with less penalties takes it. Both teams capable of screwing themselves.
Smudge Pot goes to Bonita in a close one.

Got a ring for yelling “GET BEHIND THE LINE!” Nobody respects people that brag about having a ring. Of course you’re insecure and a get back coach so us here on the blogs are not surprised.

@ Anon: That must be bulletin board fodder for the ER boys since the Oilers haven’t beaten the Dons since Medrano got there and the programs are headed in different directions. That said the Oilers have put up 90 points the last two weeks but it was against 8 man football teams. There, I gave you some real bulletin board stuff.

@SEMEAGLES-Arroyo has been BY FAR the most consistent program in the MVL for well over 35 years. Starting in 1984, Arroyo has only missed the playoffs ONCE (2014). During that time they have won 2 CIF Championships (1986 & 2016), reached the CIF Finals twice (1987 & 1991), made 6 semi-final appearances and won 25 MVL titles-and have only had 3 different head coaches since 1980! Yes, they are struggling right now, but to call them a ‘Trash Program” is just downright pathetic!
