Rename divisions that have teams with losing records or 3rd place teams in them as losers bracket divisions just like the NIT.

Being a league champion used to work in your favor when winning a CIF title. Now, in some circumstances, it works against you.

Easy fix. Less divisions. Yes, you’re still going to have the problem of teams being placed higher or lower than they should be. That’s never going away. With less divisions then at least you’ll know that every CIF champ has a wining record is a solid program.

Take the “hard work” out of the equation. They all work hard. But you can’t sit there and tell me Charter Oak isn’t more deserving than San Gabriel or Pasadena isn’t more deserving than Muir.

How about expanding the number of divisions to 50, let everybody and their cousins in, then simply not have any playoff games? We don’t want anyone’s feelings hurt because their championship doesn’t count as much as the higher divisions, so a generic plaque would be presented to all postseason qualifiers at a lavish CIF banquet. 50 years from now nobody’s going to give a rip about any of this anyway, so I present this option as a sort of diaper change for those who need it.

La Serna one and done a month ago and yet still crying. You and Charter Oak another loser should combine your all-star transfer teams next year. Maybe you can win a playoff game that way and stop your blubbering.

Ohio State and TCU each lost their conference championship and are in the CFP so yes, being a 2nd place team in high school should get yoU in the playoffs.

@? Why Keppel and Temple City? Why these schools? Come out and say it. Bring your racism into the light. C’mon, be a man and admit your racism. Clown.

FBfan explains that a team with only one loss to a tough league opponent needs to be given a second chance by going to the playoffs. In the playoffs, if that team loses just one game, they’re gone, toast, story over. All I’m advocating is that this team should be gone after losing that one league game instead…THAT was their playoff game. We need champions in the postseason, not charity cases.

So if you lose to poly you still make the playoffs if you take 2nd or3rd. If you can’t do that you can potential get off that league and go into won where you can compete for a playoff spot

CIF has managed to do the impossible. They’ve made league championship worth more than CIF championships, amazing!

Here is the solution. Have all teams play a Madden type video tournament. No injuries, no Cal preps, just what school has the best gamers. Keppel and Temple City would be the new Bosco and Mater Dei.

    @Bottom Line

The number of divisions isn’t the problem. Your solution gives no chance for teams in certain leagues to get into the playoffs even if they have a 9-1 record. For example, Long Beach Poly wins the Moore League. Let’s say that Long Beach Millikan went 9-1 and missed the playoffs when their only loss of the season was to LB Poly. How is that fair? Part of the great thing about playoffs is that you can have a potential cinderella type story and upsets.

Competitive equity isn’t even the problem. The problem IMO is the way competitive equity is decided. I know that Calpreps likes to brag about their success rate in picking winners, but allowing a computer to objectively decide what is best for 15-18 year olds is a bit far fetched. Their needs to be more subjectivity and flat out common sense that is used to decide this.

CIF/STATE CHAMPS > Almont league champs any day. Real teams want to play for the ring not a T-shirt. Ask Mater Dei what they wanna win, league or the ring. #facts

We can spout endless bromides about letting the kids have their day in the sun, but the elephant in the room is that today’s CIF titles in divisions beyond number 5 have little to none of the prestige this award is supposed to bestow. The higher -number divisions exist to lift cash from the wallets of credulous parents and uninformed fans. The solution, of course, is to revert to the system of allowing only league champs into the tournament. That means there will be far fewer participants, which means we’ll only need five divisions to cover the pairings.

Rob Wigod made a true mess of this thing, and he can’t leave soon enough.

Congratulations to San Gabriel and Muir. They have much to be proud of and people knocking them for winning at a lower division need to get over it. However, high school football players should not be playing 16 games. Get rid of these state money grabs and save them for Bosco vs. De La Salle.

@ Almont fan, CIF, Champs, & Equity for All: We should not begrudge teams like San Gabriel’s and Muir’s for their postseason successes. Other teams had the chance to knock them off in every postseason round but failed to do so.
I agree that the CIF playoff system is badly flawed; I haven’t liked it from the time it was adopted about three years ago.
With CIF Southern Section Commissioner Rob Wigod going into retirement, now would be a good time to enact changes which would do more to reward excellence. I’ve already made some proposals toward that end; please feel free to join the discussion.

@ Truth-teller: You have a point, but it isn’t the complete story. Coin flips had previously determined that in the event of a third-place tie, Alhambra would finish third, with San Gabriel ending up fourth and Montebello fifth.
Putting all of that aside, the Matadors should be congratulated for winning five straight postseason games. They have made the most of their opportunity, and that’s a testament to their hard work and determination. A 12-3 record, which the Matadors could improve to 13-3, looks good on their resume.
But rest assured that everyone will be trying to get after them next year.

I think we should scour the country to find suitable playoff partners for Keppel, so they too can reach the heights of being state champions. They did, after all, finish 6th in the Almont, and just like SG’s 4th-place achievement, this deserves our sincere respect.

Is it just me or does anyone else feel this way? Astros take first place and win the World Series. Rams take first place and are Super Bowl Champion. It would feel different and something would be missing if the Rockies took 3rd place and win the World Series. I think CIF is taking this away from these kids. First local or league champion. Second, CIF champion. Finally, state champs. That’s the way it use to be and I think the right way. What do you think?

Muir and SG are regional champions. I know Muir took 3rd in their league and SG took 4th in their league but we want competitive equity. So everyone has a chance to be CIF champs and regional champs. We are making it so league play is irrelevant. If you come in first place and over achieve we are going to punish and your program. We want to help the underachievers and the special programs. Is this what society want???

4th place in their league? What a joke
From T. Peterson: So because they were 4th in the Almont they were supposed to curl up into the fetal position and cry? No. Instead they beat every opponent that lined up across from them in the playoffs, won a CIF Championship and now will be playing for a State title. I give them all the credit. They deserve it. So your team was eliminated in the first round I’m assuming?
