A Most Valuable Player is one that can do many things well. He is a player is that is so valuable to his team that it may be hard to win without him. A Player of the Year is also one that it may be hard to win without but also one that has numbers that are off the charts – numbers that are too big to ignore. Sierra Vista running back Eric Terrazas had numbers that are too big to ignore.

Terrazas piled up 2,236 yards and 27 touchdowns on 232 carries. No need to bust out the calculator. We can tell you that’s 9.6 yards a carry.  Terrazas who had several games of over 200 yards rushing, had his best game against Bassett on September 8th when he ran for 410 yards and five touchdowns in a 60-13 victory.

Terrazas, a 5′ 9″, 155-pound senior, thrived under first year head coach Jesse Ceniceros’ double-wing offense. The Dons thrived also with an overall record of 7-4 and a trip to the CIF Division 12 CIF Playoffs where they fell to eventual CIF Champion Lancaster. Sierra Vista was coming off an 0-8 season in 2021.

“Eric Terrazas was the hammer in our turn around season. He put up some ridiculous numbers. 2.236 yards in one season is a Top 4 number for one of my players,” Ceniceros said. “The only two who got more yards than him were Rashaad Penny and Davon Booth. That’s a pretty good group of running backs to be grouped with. This recognition for Eric is well deserved.”

Terrazas was also the ultimate team player.

“He is a true team player and one of the most humble players I have coached. He will always thank his teammates for any of his success and he even bought pizza for his lineman a few times. He is a great student, great young man and he has a bright future ahead of him,” Ceniceros added.

For 2,236 yards, 27 touchdowns and for yes, buying pizza for his linemen, Eric Terrazas is the Mid Valley Sports 2022 Player of the Year.

For all he’s done, he has truly earned this honor. For what I’ve just said, I’ve earned a slice of pepperoni.
