Whittier Hires Quinsey

By Tim Peterson

(Whittier) – Whittier has named Todd Quinsey as its new head football coach sources confirmed Thursday.

Quinsey has had multiple head coaching stops including stints at Glendora and Northview. Last year he was the head coach at Bassett where he led the Olympians to the CIF Division 14 Semi-Finals where they fell to Lynwood. Bassett finished 5-8 overall.

Quinsey takes over for Visko Ancich who stepped down after 11 years at the helm. Whittier went 4-6 last year and 1-3 in the Del Rio League missing the playoffs.

    Good hire, Quinsy won most playoff games in the Bassett history in just 1 year. No playoff wins in 10+ years up until their final 4 visit!! Go olympians!! Excited for next year, best of luck coach

    @Learned Something New,

    I’ll answer your post.

    You are somewhat correct but slightly I’ll informed. La Serna has the luxury of not only being surrounded in the most beautiful, well manicured area of Whittier, but it also receives the Title 1 monies that Pioneer and Whittier help generate for the district. If Cal has higher ADA, it’s not by much….
    Here’s the issue. Schools like La Serna benefit from being in a desirable community and as a result parents believe that their kid is receiving some type of top tier education and a better environment than other schools. La Serna teachers are not better than Pioneer teachers just like Glendora teachers aren’t better than Azusa teachers, Monrovia teachers aren’t better than Muir teachers, and Bonita teachers aren’t better than Pomona teachers…..
    But the schools in the higher affluent areas have the luxury of accepting out of attendance area kids. And they don’t just accept any out of attendance area kid, they accept the top end, cream of the crop students from other schools….
    The open enrollment practice became popular about 10 years ago. And now we are seeing a greater gap- especially in athletics- between the schools in affluent areas as opposed to schools in areas that are not in the greatest of areas….
    IMO, instead of parents sending their kids to another school, I say they should stay at the school their tax $ is going to and help the perception. People will be higher vested in their own communities than in others.

    Anonymous,

    What benefits do you speak of? Sounds to me like many of you do not understand how monies are dispersed. La Serna doesn’t receive a larger pot than the others. As a matter of fact, I believe they receive less when it comes to program funding. When it comes to ADA, Cal has a larger student population, so they may receive more attendance based funding.

    By the way. monies are tied to specific programs, so this, “Schools should spend more $$ on sports programs” notion is nonsense. As far as how much sports boosters raise for specific sports programs, that’s on each Booster.

    but until PARENTS start making a fuss, NOTHING will change.

    by making a fuss I’m also referring to attending meetings and becoming involved.

    most of the parents who get involved are at LS so you wonder why they get all the benefits.

    @FbFan
    absolutely correct.

    If any of the local Whittier schools want to become relevant, they must put $resources$ into the schools athletics. School district needs to split funds even across the board also, they cant give LS more bc they test better. Let everyone get a piece of the pie. $

    @Anonymous,

    Ideally yes, realistically no. The country looks to be trending into this “school choice” practice which will only increase the gap between the haves and the have nots.

    whittier needs to go back and enforce its boundaries. LS cant keep taking the cream off the top from what ? a population of 150k? whittier including south whittier…

    till that happens, you will never see equality in whitter schools.

    I just checked Maxpreps as you should before you make false statements. Bassett lost in the first round to Heritage Christian 30-28 in D13. Two points is not an enormous amount. @sports man stop showing your ignorance.

    Just curious why MVS responds to a obvious lying troll.
    From T. Peterson: Sometimes you have to when they’re completely wrong. You have to let them know what’s right and what’s wrong. I mean he said his “sources” told him they were going to drop the program. That had to be called out. I can always simply delete all of his comments which I may do if his takes continue to be this bad.

    I didn’t miss on anything. Try harder next time bro. Just admit Whittier is a buttcrack level program what is their record the past ten years? Do they even have a field?
    From T. Peterson: Actually you missed on everything and I didn’t have to try at all. It took me 2 seconds to pull up your comments. You said Whittier was going to drop the program- WRONG! You said I was “gaslighting” when I said Whittier hired a new coach- WRONG! I can re-post the comments if you want but I was trying to save you the embarrassment. Let it go man. You whiffed…bad!

    Are you really complaining that the best 3 players made all the plays…. at a school with very few players that know how to play football…maybe you wanted the ball to go to that lineman who can’t block?

    Basset went to the CIF finals under Quinsey. This is a VERY good hire for Whittier.

    I really can’t blame the coaches from leaving Bassett. I blame Bassett School for not keeping good teachers, administrators and good coaches. They have $23mil in reserves and still will not pay their teachers, administrators and especially coaches. So they get what they deserve or “you get what you pay for.”

    The team before he got to Bassett come in first place and was in D13 with all the key starters coming back. This year they came in second place with an 3-7 record and was in D14. You tell me, did Whittier hire the right guy for the job or did CIF help with the way they seeded these teams? I hope he can turn Whittier into a winner but all indications say no.

    leroy .. please provide some evidence to support your insulting this guy. I predict you will not provide evidence. ‘A known loser’? ///// enough with leroy ! I have no idea how much success or failure as short term head coach twice ( i believe). One guarantee is the two programs he head coached are ‘within a higher class ‘league of football than the Del Rio League. He assisted under some very successful coaches who directed programs deep into playoffs. DRL has one very good consistent , well coached program.. ER pretty good. Cal and Santa Fe are very beatable, and if WHS can improve (they will improve because this guy much better than ‘boring Visco”. I predict possibility , within much lower CIF division, move WHS toward ‘Fitch Days’ in playoffs

    Bad hire by whitter my son plays for bassett and would complain they wouldn’t practice and the 3 seniors who tried to transfer would do everything I’d watch the games and linemen could not block at all but feel bad for bassett once again can’t keep a coach or create a good football program for the kids.

    If this hire came with a teaching position, the Cardinals should see at least a 15% improvement over what Ancich brought. If Todd is a walk-on, all bets are off.

    Making Whittier good in Del Rio much more difficult than making Bassett D14 competitive. Santa Fe hire / situation is coach’s only positive .
