(South El Monte) – Tony Aguilar did a little bit of everything for South El Monte in a 27-14 victory over Garey at “The Swamp” Thursday night.
The Eagles looked good on their first drive but two incompletions and two failed runs stopped the march drive on the two- yard line.
The Vikings Garey tried to take advantage and pounded the ball up the field but a pitch pass went through the back of the end zone and Garey turned it over on downs.
On the next drive South quarterback Matthew Medina found Fabian Hernandez on a pair of big pass plays and running back Michael Valencia capped it off with a 16-yard run to paydirt.
The Eagles recovered an onside kick but weren’t able to capitalize.
Garey tried to take advantage of the turnover on downs but big running back Miguel Pascual got stopped on the four- yard line.
The Vikings took over first in the second half and moved down field with a pass from Iker Saavedra to David Davila then a 3-yard blast from Alex Vaca to it tie it up at 7-7.
South’s next possession resulted in a punt but Garey muffed it and gave it right back.
Eagles took advantage and Medina hit Aguilar for a 32-yard catch and run making it 13-7 after a missed extra point.
Just 15-seconds later the Vikings took the lead when Vaca broke a 58-yard run to the end zone to make it 14-13.
It only took the Eagles 18-seconds to take the lead back when Medina hit Nathan Mendoza who was wide open and he took it to the house from 68-yards out making it 20-14.
Garey was stopped again on fourth and short.
After a few series from both teams that saw a turnover on downs and a punt, the Vikings Raul Osorio ripped the ball out of Medina’s hands and gave Garey a shot at tying the game and taking the lead.
Saavedra would roll out and get picked off by Aguilar who took it 95-yards for the score and to put the game away at 27-14.
South El Monte will stay home and face Firebaugh next week while Garey, still looking for its first win, will face Wilson (Hacienda Heights).
Blanked… He had 10 catches for 195yds
FridayKnight Get back coach is gonna ignore me for a few posts then come out barking. I knew her routine. Are you gonna cry if SEM beats you guys?
Too late Goldy
ElMonte is playing South Hills something south would never do. They like the Glendale Hoover Keppel Firebaugh type schools. I know for a fact Rio Hondo prep tried to schedule them but we’re declined.
Sentiment acknowledged but don’t put Bishop
Montgomery in same category as Firebaugh. They are the team that played San Gabriel in D13 final last year and everyone thought SG was great !
Bishop
Montgomery coach was LA Avengers arena coach over a decade ago and he knows what he’s doing . They start every season slow but he puts the pieces together as the season progresses and they are ok by the end of the year . So schedule them early is the mantra !
BMonty is a basketball school and talent level for football is receding , but a far cry from Firebaugh !!
Get Back Coach! Stop commenting on SEM stories and worry about Arroyo. You guys suck.
@fridayknights
Aguilar wasn’t shutout vs Montebello he scored a td. I do agree with you with the soft schedule though. Alhambra is pretty bad but that game has been on the schedule for 5-6 years now. The rest of the schedule is bad for sure. You probably should never schedule Montgomery and Fireball in the same season ever. Hopefully next year SEM steps up the schedule like a El Rancho or Covina or South Hills someone like that
We’ll see come arroyo week @FridayKnights
You eagle fans blasting Mt View for a cupcake schedule here’s one for you chumps, SEM will be playing firebaugh next pffffhahahah what’s a firebaugh you ask, well they’ve won a total of 5 games in 5 seasons
11 total wins in 10 seasons this is the equivalent of playing Keppel so before you guys start anointing anyone as “the dude” let’s wait til they play some competition your dude got blanked by an average Montebello squad. My Tia Dolores can put numbers up against Busop Montgomery or firebaugh lol
Eagle leads Aguilas. A win is a win. 🦅
Don’t Doubt the South!
