T-Minus-24 Days until “The Mid Valley Classic”
Good Morning!
Smudge Pot #1: November 17, 1972 at Bonita.
During the course of the football season Bonita had been using a Turkish battle cry; “Azizleri Hakla!”
It wasn’t until halftime of the first Smudge Pot game with San Dimas that its meaning was announced; “Beat the Saints!”
Didn’t work.
After a scoreless first quarter, SD’s Wayne Moses returned a punt 63-yards for the first touchdown of the game and this intense rivalry. In third quarter Moses ran 28-yards for another touchdown to make it 14-0 San Dimas.
Things went from bad to worse for the Bearcats when punter Harold Drake had a snap sail over his head. Scooping up the ball his attempt at a kick was blocked by Tony Perez and recovered by Randy Spahr, who returned it 23-yards to paydirt.
Down three scores, Bonita was forced into another punting situation. This time Drake’s punt hit his up-back, SD’s Bob Rollins picked up the ball and went in for the game’s fourth touchdown.
In the fourth quarter, after Dave Johnson intercepted a Bearcat pass by Bruce McNaught (2 of 15 for 28-yards), San Dimas quarterback Steve Barnard hit John Kerfoot from 14-yards for another score.
Bonita would collect only three first downs the entire night as it finished the season 2-7.
San Dimas finished 3-4 in the Hacienda League, 5-4 overall.
Amazing what a little research can turn up on the Smudge Pot game…I am totally bought it…Staff assignments done for zero week…Others took San Gabriel-Muir, Rowland-Baldwin Park, and that game between Charter Oak and Glendora…I took the Smudge…
Now if I can only get some preferred parking…Perhaps Podley can work something out for me…
Monday night’s lineup for “Rush Week” (August 23) includes Jim Singiser, Matt Koffler, and Whittier Christian HC Sergio Gradilla and DC Pete Karavedas.
I don’t know, I kind of liked the video. Bag on me if you didn’t like the El Monte video, but saying the Lions will have a bad season or good season based on 2:44 clip is like saying Tim Tebow will be rookie of the year in the NFL just because he scored a touchdown last night.
Of course that’s one more touchdown offensively in one game than the Dallas Cowboys have scored in two games and eight quarters this preseason. Smile.
Folks really seem to like Bell Gardens chances this season. I like them too, there’s just a lot of congestion at the top of the Almont.
With the Dodgers ten games out now, I’m still waiting for the Padre collapse that was supposed to have arrived about a month or so ago…
Final Add Dodgers: Matt Kemp is one of the few reasons to watch the team play, mistake to trade him. Not unless Roger Cedeno is available.
Go EMA!
“Football Rush Week” is coming…August 23-27.
Stay thirsty my friends…
