Game Night: Week 3

All kickoffs are at 7:00 p.m. unless otherwise indicated:

Thursday September 12

Monrovia (3-0) at Don Lugo (1-2)

Both teams can score. Don Lugo has been involved in three shootouts and Monrovia is averaging 50 points per game. Also both teams are getting solid quarterback play. Don Lugo’s Kalib Pacheco and Monrovia freshman Jesse Saucedo are playing at a high level. It might be a long one. The scoreboard operators need to be on point. Monrovia outscores the Conquistadores.

Chino (0-3) at Schurr (2-1)

After a good year last year Chino is off to a rough start this season. The Cowboys are 0-3 and were shutout in the first two games. Schurr is 2-1 and its only loss was to a powerful La Serna team. The Spartans look poised to have a big year. Schurr has too much for Chino in this one.

Friday September 13

Los Altos (1-1) at Burroughs (1-1)

Good test for both teams. Burroughs, last year’s Pacific League champs, has split its first two games and is coming off a nice win over Harvard-Westlake while Los Altos, also 1-1, fell to West Covina last week. Burroughs wants a win before before heading onto the rigors of league. The Bears come out on top.

Arroyo (1-2) at Maranatha (2-1) (Thursday)

Both teams need a win after tough losses last week. The Knights fell at home to Arcadia while the Minutemen got shellacked by Rio Hondo Prep. Maranatha has some nice weapons in quarterback Luke McNulty and running back Miles O’Malley. Arroyo was running a two-quarterback system last week. The Knights will have trouble keeping up. Minutemen get the W.

Northview (3-0) at Covina (3-0) (Covina District Field)

Maybe the best game of the weekend. Northview has three impressive wins out of the gate. Some thought the Vikings would be tested by Glendora last week but Northview rolled by three touchdowns. Covina with an explosive offense, was in a shootout last week against Diamond Ranch but came out of it with a 45-41 victory. Should be a high scoring affair. Last team with the ball may win. Covina’s Kwame Parrish and Jake Duronslet as well as Northview’s Keanu Tauvao and Erik Jimenez could all have big games. It will come down to who makes the last play. Northview survives.

St. Francis (0-3) at Muir (0-2)

St Francis is 0-3 but the Golden Knights have played a schedule that would make USC cringe. The same could be said for Muir which has lost to Bonita and Charter Oak who have a combined record of 6-0. Muir might hang around early and make some plays but ultimately St. Francis gets it done. Golden Knights get their first win.

St. Francis 28 Muir 13

South Hills (1-2) at West Covina (2-1)

Both teams like to run the ball but West Covina does it with more of a physical edge. The Bulldogs just keep pounding it until they wear you down. Zander Requena is the bell cow and will be the main man for Maggiore’s troops against the Huskies. South Hills will need to run it successfully and burn clock to stay in the game. But if they fall behind early it could be a long night. West Covina wins.

Bonita (3-0) vs. San Dimas (2-0) (Citrus College 7:30 p.m.)

The annual Smudge Pot is always fun. This year the game has even more intrigue with both teams coming in undefeated. Bonita knocked off two solid teams in Muir and Ontario Christian before dismantling Grand Terrce last week. Travis Lippert has stepped in nicely at quarterback after Daniel Mielke II transferred to Ontario Christian. San Dimas and Caleb Morquecho have outscored their two opponents, Burbank and Pasadena, 98-14. Not sure the Saints can run up those kinds of numbers on the Bearcats. Bonita makes the plays late and comes out on top. Bearcats take the Smudge Pot.

What were they mad about ? Back up QB came into play ? Looked like big plays were running touchdowns and costly turnover

Don Lugos coaching staff is trash! They were so mad after the game they were yelling at Monrovias coaching staff! Soar losers! I think the HC name is Knight. You can see him in the background of Fred’s video when he is interviewing back up Qb Dj. Crying like a girl, being held back

Good picks, I would change Sierra Vista… according to Tim they will place second in the weakest league on earth…

I follow Mt Views instagram how do they post a player of the week for a week they scored zero and gave up 34? It’s like participation trophies.
