(Covina) Keanu Tauvao rushed for 230 yards and four scores as the unbeaten Northview Vikings beat the previously unbeaten Covina Colts 49-21 Friday night at Covina District Field.
Those who were in attendance looking for a game with big plays on both sides of the ball were not dissapointed.
The Vikings got on the board first when Northview quarterback Erik Jimenez called his own number on a nine-yard carry to paydirt. Daniel Garcia added the extra point and with 6:18 left in the first Northview was up 7-0. The Vikings were set up with good field position when Jake Duronslet’s pass fell incomplete on fourth and one.
A few minutes later the Colts pulled to within one point when Kwame Parrish scored on a five yard run to cap a 6-play 80-yard drive. The extra point was blocked and Covina trailed 7-6.
Midway through the second, Northview went on an 8-play 54-yard drive that saw Tauvao get his first score of the night.
The Colts tied the game with a little over two minutes to play in the first half. Duronslet found Matthew Olivas Jr.over the middle for an 18-yard score. Covina went for two and Duronslet knifed his way into the endzone.
With the game tied at 14, lightning would strike on the ensuing kickoff. Isaiah Lucero fielded the kickoff at his own one and worked his way through the Colt cover team. Lucero found and seam was off to the races on a 99-yard kickoff return for the score. Garcia again added the extra point.
Neither team put a scoring drive together for the rest of the half and the teams headed to the break with the Vikings up 21-14.
Northview doubled their advantage with another Tauvao touchdown with 11:10 left in the third quarter. The drive was highlighted by a 69-yard pass from Jimenez to Jaishon Bledsoe.
On their ensuing drive the Colts cut the lead to seven when Duronslet found Olivas Jr. again this time from 26-yards away. It was close as Covina would get for the rest of the game.
Two more Tauvao touchdowns, one a two-yard run and the other an 84-yard burst of brilliance iced the game for the Vikings.
In between the Tauvao scores the Colts did manage a drive deep into Viking territory but the drive was silenced when Isaiah Lucero picked off Duronslet in the corner of the endzone.
Rober Lucero added the seventh and final score with 3:37 left in the game and for good measure, picked off Duronslet’s second pass of the evening to seal the game.
Northview will look to keep their momentum going next week when they take on Village Christian. Covina will look to rebound and get back in the win column when the travel south to take on Santa Fe in their final tune-up before league play starts.
