Eagles Get the Jump on Bell Gardens

(South El Monte) – South El Monte jumped on Bell Gardens for five runs in the first two innings and went on to beat the visiting Lancers 10-5 Saturday.

Bell Gardens got close cutting the lead to 6-5 with four runs in the fifth but the Eagles responded with four of their own in the sixth to put it away.

In the first inning Armando Huizar was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a double by Anthony Romero. Romero scored on a single by Christian Ortega and a double by Xavier Cordova plated Romero.

The Eagles added two more in the second when Anthony Mata walked and Huizar singled. Ryan Leon’s base hit scored Mata and Leon brought in Huizar with a single to right. Just like that it was 5-0 South.

Bell Gardens got one back in the fourth inning as Brandon Jaramillo reached on an error, stole second and scored on a single to center by Noah Samano.

South El Monte made it 6-1 in bottom of the fourth. Romero reached on a fielder’s choice after a walk to Huizar and came around to score on another base knock by Leon.

Ortega worked the first four innings for the Eagles allowing just the one unearned run. Matt Medina then came on in relief in the fifth inning. The Lancers had their best look at the game in the fifth. Steven Tovar singled, and Erick Perea was hit by a pitch. With one out Miguel Sion struck out but reached first when the ball got away from the catcher and Tovar took third. Tovar then scored on a balk and Perea crossed the plate on a throwing error by the catcher. A double by Jaramillo chased home Sion and Jaramillo eventually worked his way around on a ground ball. It was suddenly a one run game.

South El Monte answered with four of its own in the sixth. Huizar, Ortega and Cordova all had hits in the inning and scored. Mata walked and came around to score. Cordova, Romero and Medina also had RBIs. by the time the dust had settled it was 10-5 Eagles.

Ortega struck out six in his four innings for South El Monte. Medina, Gabriel Canchola and Leon pitched the last three innings. For Bell Gardens Gilberto Rivera started and worked into the sixth inning.

The Eagles improved to 6-2 with the victory while the Lancers fell to 5-3.
