(Montebello) – Montebello scored seven runs in the second inning and went on to a 15-0 Mercy Rule rout of Schurr Tuesday at Schurr High School.
Fernando Cruz threw five scoreless innings for Montebello and allowed just one hit and struck out five. Manny Arana drove in five runs to lead the offense.
The Oilers got one run in the first inning when leadoff hitter Nathan Ibarra reached on an error, advanced on another error and scored on a ground ball by Cruz. They blew it wide open in the second.
Nathan Govea led off with a double and after a couple of walks he scored on a ground out by Ibarra. Michael Rios was hit by a pitch, Cruz walked to load the bases and Arana cleared them with a double to left. Govea followed with a single to drive in another run for an 8-0 lead.
Montebello put the mercy rule into effect with six more in the fourth inning. Cruz had an RBI triple in the inning and Arana drove in another run with a double. Ibarra, Govea and Andrew Salazar also reached base and scored in the inning.
The Oilers hit the 15 mark in the fifth when Arana drove in his fifth run of the game with a single to plate Cruz. Cruz had two extra base hits and scored two runs to go along with his one-hit shutout on the mound.

James Borbon started and pitched three-plus innings for Schurr before being relieved by Evan Sanchez.
With the victory Montebello remained perfect in the Almont League at 12-0 and improved to 16-6 overall. Schurr fell to 7-5 in league and 8-14 on the season.
