(Downey) – Downey quarterback Oscar Rios committed to Arizona Friday. Rios had narrowed it down to UCLA and Arizona before settling on the Wildcats.
Last year as a junior, Rios completed 154 of 254 passes for (60.6 %) for 2,554 yards and 22 touchdowns with six interceptions. He also carried the ball 108 times for 735 yards and 11 touchdowns and was named Gateway League MVP.
Rios is looking forward to a big year before heading off to Arizona.
Whether a coach is allowed to poach other schools’ talent or not, the art of getting kids to participate in a given program is critical to the success of that program. It’s called salesmanship or personality, and truth be told, it’s critical to the success of each of our lives–in all areas–not just sports. So Williams is doing very well in this endeavor and deserves credit.
@ Here Here,
That’s all about one’s perspective. In the modern age, I guess you’re right. NIL deals and all that other stuff. Coaching has become more about trying to find a way to get the best players to go and play for you.
But that’s not what high school football was intended to be. It was intended to be about providing an outlet for kids in a specific neighborhood to come together and play for their school. School and community pride should matter.
So while your sentiment has merit, I disagree with that’s what makes a coach good. In fact, sometimes a coach sacrifices his own personal values so he can get that player to “want” to play for him.
I’ll take coaches stay true to themselves and who get a below average player to play average, and an average player to play above average. The Oscar Rios’s and Aidan Chiles’s of the world would excel no matter who their coach was.
I disagree, these recruiters who poach kids and recruit are no good for high school football, those kids would’ve been good anywhere and would receive a scholarship no matter what, people like Jack Williams promise them something that they already have, talent and genetics.
@?
You’re being modest. Your grandma makes a killer chocolate cake, but you’re leaving out the part that she’s 6-4, can still run a 4.9 40, and helped train the Manning brothers!!!!
You just made my case: Williams GETS these guys to play for him, which is at least 50% of what makes a HS coach worth his salt.
@HH-My grandma could coach up the QB’s Williams gets.
He would fall into the best recruiter category.
In view of this awesome QB production, maybe we all should revisit our votes on best area coach and put Jack Williams at the top.
