If Alhambra is able to win the Division 14 championship, it would be a nice thing for the team, the school, and the community. However, I’d see it primarily as a milestone on the road to achievements at higher levels.
We all know the construct in the CIF Southern Section: Division 1 is at the very top, and all the other divisions descend from there in numerical order. That, too, is not rocket science.
I completely understand Vrooman is happy his team is still playing. I’m happy his team is still playing. My post was meant to show the contradiction that exists in winning CIF’s ultimate prize, but in a category (D14) most of us feel shouldn’t exist. I really do wonder how Ron would react to the Moors winning this division, because the plaque could be taken to mean you’ve reached the top, but the question is: the top of what? I apologize for any and all hurt my comments may have occasioned.
So the answer is no, Vrooman won’t tell us how he would react to an Alhambra D14 title. Would we see crocodile tears from a man who has disparaged the D14 category? Would he want to speak at the school’s celebratory pep rally to explain how this D14 win adds nicely to the Moors’ past achievements? In short, would he become a spiritual brother to that other unstable character ‘Rise of the Titans’?
I’ll let everyone in on a fact that is not taught in schools: the issue of reason vs. emotion is THE key determinant of success in all human endeavors, so I’m not trying to needle Ron on this point, merely asking him to come clean on something that matters tremendously.
From T. Peterson: Geez, let it go already. He’s explained to you six ways from Sunday how he feels about D-14 and Alhambra. he’s not happy with the system but happy that his team is still playing. Why is this so hard to comprehend? You know what is not rocket science? The ability to read something and then comprehend it – something that you have failed miserably at. If you have problems with the system call CIF. They make the rules. FYI – if you write something again questioning his response or make a ridiculous comment it won’t be posted. You’ll never see it. It will be deleted immediately.
@ Not Rocket Science: I’ve made my views very clear on the CIF Southern Section’s flawed football playoff system and on other things that it does which are highly problematic.
It appears that you like to put down schools and their athletic programs which have to compete within that system. If you don’t like Alhambra, that’s all right; just knock yourself out. However, you can still support your school while criticizing the people who run CIF. Those two things are not mutually exclusive.
If the Moors can win some more games this year and/or next, then maybe they can move up a division or two, which is something I’ve been looking forward to for years. That would certainly represent quality football.
And even being 6-5 at this point after two consecutive 1-9 performances is far better than remaining a perennial doormat like Mark Keppel, Bosco Tech, and Workman. We’re on the right track at the moment.
All these arguments are stupid, if you’re not playing D-1 you’re trash.
Our dear friend Ron Vrooman has stated that CIF should eliminate D14, but also that since Alhambra is in it, the team can better its won/loss record and build for the future. The man vacillates between thinking that the playoffs are for good teams, but also are a great way to rehab the chronically bad teams among us. I challenge the man to state exactly how he would evaluate an Alhambra title win in this year’s derby. Will he be philosophical about it, saying it has to be understood in context, or will he go crazy praising his beloved program?
Since about 80 % of high school football teams have a negative rating many posters would like to see football done away with. All schools will be private soon anyway in DT’s 3rd term so why not?
No doubt $$ is one focus cif uses
I suggest ‘the older system of participating in bracket formation” was, and is still, much much better and logical! Basically the system used for decades focused on ” top 3 teams in each league ( with possibility of very few variations) earned a playoff berth. NO NO of course ( above suggestion ?) the league champions were not faced up with other league champs! First place teams basically played third place teams in the first round; and the first place teams were honored with home games Common sense?? Yes or no commenters ? Basically , with possible variations for a variety of reasons, second place teams faced second place teams in the first round = logic has been absolutely absent, the last few years, by CIF BOARD COMMITTEE’, during the process of creating “FAIR , LOGICAL, AND VERY COMPETITIVE BALANCE BETWEEN OUR HIGH SCHOOL TEAMS
@ Not Rocket Science: Well, OK; it seems that you’ve only selectively read what I’ve written on this thread—and on previous ones—about the CIF Southern Section and Division 14.
I applaud the players, coaches, and all the people who support their teams, win or lose. On the other hand, I have consistently ripped the badly flawed system which has been set up by the people who run CIF, and I’m not backing off that stance.
Just make a ruling that teams with a negative power rating at season’s end are not eligible for postseason play. I have been a vocal critic of the double digits, because D10 is where the negative numbers start to prevail. This simple fix won’t happen because CIF doesn’t want to give up the extra money coming from those higher division games, and many parents (and fellows like Vrooman) are more than willing to applaud the double digits when their own interests are involved.
@ Question Mark: I remember Rice-A-Roni, the “San Francisco treat”! Those of us who are still in the playoffs can enjoy the run, whether it’s a long or short one, or something in between.
After this season is over, everyone in the CIF Southern Section should sit down and make the changes that are necessary to promote quality football and quality competition in every other sport.
I believe that the league realignment and formation of conferences in football are a good start, but I’m sure the issues I brought up comprise only a partial list of the things that still need to be addressed.
‘rise of the titans? What kind of rise do you mean? A rise very very similar to last baseball season 2025 cif playoffs brackets that , as far as i am concerned, were put together by a bunch of foolish cif board committee members who have actually used a weird process (VERY WOKE LIKE TROPHY FOR PARTICIPATION!) which ended the playoffs with one team that finished in place 4 or 5 in MVLeague reaching ” the cif finals (actually playing for the cif championship and winner can get championship rings ) ? CIF selection committee members possibly? never played a competitive sport in their lives? EXEMPLARY of one of the worst processes possible is: mountain view hs baseball team did not do well in league! if brackets were done with quality competition in mind they would never be in the playoffs because they never “earned ‘ anything in their season competitively! How can a person argue with this? ok South el Monte played mountain view twice in league competition; in those two games SEM scored 30 runs and MV scored 1 run! yes this is a correct statistic! SEM may have won the league or was very close to winning league and SEM put in a pretty good competitive bracket ; SEM lost in the first round to a very good team, while MV goes to the cif finals in the weakest division that never should have been added to the playoffs because most of the teams in this bracket played almost terrible during their season! MV lost in the finals 2 to 1 to probably a decent small school team, but MV never did anything to deserve a playoff berth as the teams in their league kicked the feces out of them big time. SO many very good deserving athletes who played very good all year got knocked out very early and one of the worst ( in 2025 season only/dont know about seasons before) teams in the san gabriel valley makes it to the finals? Who did they beat in the playoffs? This is a joke! School of the blind? Middle school talent teams? i remember when playing in the playoffs was an honor
who is jealous of pioneer? last year great finish in d14 cif championship i think! I am very happy for Coach juarez because he has been a very good coach for years as he almost always seemed to get players play to their potential! When in del rio league he did the same , and won a championship ( hope i am correct in 98 or 99 when given lots of talent ) with a Crenshaw transfer back and good supporting cast
It’s true: more people talk about the DDDs (Dismal Double Digits) than anything else. It’s for the same reason more people stare at trainwrecks…and believe me, the DDDs are that. I personally have an affinity for the Pioneer sports scene, because I just love a good joke.
” football dad” i don’t think i am putting down those kids; i put down the weird Woke cif selection people who act , in the process of putting together brackets, like they hate competitive athletic competition
wrap up! When teams like mountain view baseball team is selected for the playoffs in any division , and they were selected into the lowest and weakest division, ! I suggest cif board committee is so far out of reality when putting together the brackets! Very simple logic and common sense is ‘ South el monte beats mountain view 30 to 1 both games combined! SEM earns a much better bracket and loses in the first round to a good team. OUT THEY GO ! But mountain view makes it all the way to the cif finals and parents , coaches, etc are ridiculously commenting such as GREAT COACHING AT THE RIGHT TIME OF SEASON AND PEAKING FOR CIF CHAMPIONSHIP? how ignorant is my suggestion! unfair to many other hard working teams and student athletes
The truth is more people talk about the double digit division teams then the so-called real football teams whoever those are. So enjoy eating your Rice-A-Roni as you read about Alhambra and Pioneer.
Great responses Ron. Mic drop achieved. I’m pretty sure teams that got knocked out in the first round would appreciate a double division ring.
The little toys we used to get in the Cracker Jack boxes were more valuable than a D14 ring. Much thanks to Mr. Riser of Pioneer for interrupting the conversation about real football.
Don’t be jealous. More rings for Pioneer coming our way.
@ Football Dad: You brought up an interesting question. Bishop Amat had been in Playoff Division 2 for a while, so I was a bit surprised to see that they’ve dropped down to D3.
Yipes! an unheard of 3rd place finish in league and a one and done drubbing in the first round despite being down division’ed.
Now the predictable get rid of the coach blame game. But is that the real cause.
Things are not going well at good Ole Monrovia High.
Could this be the start of a slow decline into mediocrity similar to that decline from greatness to doormat at Temple City High School Football. Or is this just a hiccup and all will return to normal like the morning after a nightmare. Who knows what the future will bring? There is a season for all things, Recency bias assumes things are always the same, when nothing moves in a straight line.
I think some counseling might be in order to adjust expectations if this may be the new normal. I feel for your disappointment and wish you well.
Correct me if im wrong isn’t this helping a school with a participation trophy when Bishop Amat plays for A D3 title, don’t they play D1 all season.
@ Truth Teller: You can keep your sarcastic gratitude, man; I’m not suddenly fine with Division 14 because Alhambra is in it. But since we were awarded a playoff berth, what do you expect us to do, turn it down?
Yes, I said some time ago that Division 14 is a joke. However, my comment was directed at the CIF Southern Section, and not toward the players, coaches, and schools who have to compete in the system that CIF has set up.
I favor the elimination of Division 14, but it’s still here, and at the moment there are still eight football programs which are trying to win a championship and enhance their player development in the process. I believe I’m speaking on behalf of many who are trying to make the best of a flawed system until it can be changed.
And it’s not just Division 14. How about the idea of waiting until the end of the regular season to organize the playoff divisions, or of making league champions play each other in the first round?
Then there’s CIF’s practice of often making teams with the better records go on the road for playoff games. Also, teams that go 1-9 or 2-8 in the regular season should never be allowed into the playoffs, but it has happened on multiple occasions.
There is plenty wrong with CIF, and adults are responsible for that. However, we should always celebrate the athleticism and good sportsmanship displayed by our high schoolers. That’s the overall purpose, right?
Ron I remember you saying 14 was a joke and should be taken away, not you’re saying 14 is fine bcuz your school is in it. How bout you just stay quiet until your school loses. Because we all know Alhambra isn’t it. Thanks
@ The Wrap Up: We’ll just keep playing until our next loss, or until that improbable championship victory. Our players will be the authors of their own story. They’ve come a long way in one year, and they are to be commended for their efforts.
@ Football Dad, FBFan, Truth & How Quickly We Forget: I agree with your sentiment. Regardless of the flaws in the current system—and there are several—all of this should be primarily about our student-athletes, their schools, and their communities.
Quit being so negative ,Wrap. Even in the lower divisions, let the kids suit up one more time with their friends and play in a game for probably the last time
With the USC win to buoy my spirits, I will offer my congratulations to the Alhambra program for being, as Vrooman puts it, “most improved.” No need to play any more games, because with my praise, you’ve achieved the highest honor possible.
Word on the street is that Schurr high school Spartans will be changing their name to the Schurr High Chickens. Because all they do during playoff time is laying an egg…
It’s simple the division are not created by the kids that play and not all kids can afford or attend other schools out side there district so they play at the school they must attend whether a D1 prospect or a 4 year bench warmer dont mock the kids that play a game they love at the end of the day its high school football and a small percentage play at the next level, thanks for complimenting on my comment of the year
@ The Wrap Up: Ah, at least give Alhambra a little credit for being 6-5 now after two consecutive 1-9 seasons. Since CIF just happened to give us a Division 14 playoff berth, our idea is to make the best possible use of it. Anything less would be a waste.
Perhaps this D14 bid for the Moors can be alternately considered a Most Improved Team award. A five-win improvement from one year to the next shouldn’t be scoffed at too much. We’ll see about making that six games next week.
I agree monrovia coach must go…..stop hiring these city section coaches
The double digit teams are aware of their place in the postseason, and everyone who follows H.S. football can see it too. Question: how many divisions do we have to have before we start calling the quality of football bad? Do you respect the game of football, or this an issue of giving everyone, regardless of merit, a trophy?
Football Dad with the comment of the year. Whether your a D-1 can’t miss prospect or a 4 year bench warmer. You deserve the credit and praise from the outsiders for doing something bigger than yourself and for making sacrifices that others are unwilling to do. Football is the greatest sport in the world because so many people can contribute and learn life lessons….
All the other BS that gets posted means nothing compared to that!
May not be important in your eyes, but is too the kids that play in it.
Schurr Spartans motto was WAR this year. But just like the Spartans are known for only good for one battle.
Any kid that straps on a helmet and dedicated themselves to the game no matter the division, I get D14 can’t compete with the higher division but mocking the division is nit fair to the kids that play and dedicated their time.
Monrovia head football coach must go. He can’t make adjustments yes you lost your quarter back. Question why did you loose him to injury. Answer because your running him late in the fourth quarter with the game already decided should have been out with the second string quarterback getting some reps . Roosevelt please rehire him Monrovia isn’t the place for him. The kids deserve better. Also take your coaches you brought with you.
Wow one and done again maybe Schurr Spartains should recruit better kids to win a playoff game not just League
We were shocked that 1-9 San Juan Hills was able to eliminate 9-1 Downey in D2, but of course San Juan had the ridiculous advantage of playing this game at home. In that same division, Vista Murrietta, always tough, put Damien into the offseason, 36-31.
Skipping to D4, the barn-burner was Muir at Charter Oak, which again came down to the last seconds with Charter Oak prevailing as they did earlier in the year, this time in was 17-14 in favor of the Chargers.
D5 saw a resurgent St Paul knockout Inland Empire power Etiwanda, 38-13, while La Serna was able to deny Lakewood any points at all despite the visitors making 4 trips into the Whittier team’s red zone. Andy George’s team pulled this defensive struggle out of the fire 7-0. Also in D5, RHP just keeps rolling, this time dispensing with Thousand Oaks, 50-34. And Bonita showed it is still a force to be reckoned with, beating Northview 31-19.
Sad news to report in D6: Upland put the first loss onto the otherwise perfect season of Los Altos, beating the Conquerors 42-21.
Good news to report in D7 as Saugus rolled Schurr 22-19, giving fuel to the conversation about the Spartans never doing anything in the postseason.
A relative surprise occurred in D9 last evening when Warren showed signs of life taking down a good Norwalk team 17-7. San Dimas likewise became animated enough to beat a quality Rowland squad, 24-22.
WARNING: WE ARE ENTERING THE DOUBLE DIGITS, WHERE QUALITY OF PLAY IS SKETCHY AT BEST, ATROCIOUS AT IT’S WORST.
Pacifica of Garbage Grove had little trouble putting ER out of its misery, cruising to a 35-14 win in the Southeast Asian part of town. Monrovia also took it on the chin from Hillcrest, 41-14.
We skip to D13, because these double digits don’t deserve to be covered exhaustively. In this lucky #13 Pete Gonzalez and crew were able to grind one out over a weak Rancho Alamitos team 19-17. That will give the Schurr bashers a tiny bit of ammunition in their yearly put-downs of all things Oilers.
Last, and certainly least, Alhambra bested Bassett 25-0 in a D14 meeting, while everyone’s favorite rising team, Pioneer, advanced with a win over Godinez, 42-21.
And that’s the wrap. It must be noted that the double digit divisions are in no way, shape or form up to the standards of what most people would consider playoff caliber football. I included them in my wrap-up only because I was in a good mood over the USC win.
Still life at Montebello! Great job Oilers! They coach up what they have every year!
Schurr out in the 1st round again?
Word on the street is that DELETED ate off one of the bus tires after losing again in round 1. Same stuff different year. It goes to show you about being humble. All that hype, all the screaming and yelling, all that pounding of the chest resulting in a sad long bus drive home. Better luck next year…
