Minutemen Pound Spartans Outta Sparta

Much has contributed to Maranatha's 4-1 start

By Josh Ouellette(La Canada) After exchanging quarterback touchdown runs in the first quarter to tie the game at 7-7, Maranatha outscored La Canada 36-14 to beat the Spartans 43-21.

The Minutemen were able to close out the half with a 16-7 lead after a 40-yard pass from Andrew Elfers to Josh Jones and also tacked on three more with a 21-yard field goal from Matt Marbach with three seconds in the half.

Maranatha’s Elfers was the catalyst the Minutemen needed to beat up LC through the air and on the ground. Three touchdowns coming by pass and one on the ground and over 200 yards combined of offense. Countering Elfers, especially in the second half was running back Omar Younger who had 125 yards rushing and a touchdown on the night as well.

The Spartans struggled to find success on the ground and in the air, minus in the first quarter, hitting a stone wall in the Minutemen defense. LC quarterback Scott Gray struggled to find time to throw the ball being sacked six times on the night, and he didn’t find much running room either. Anchored by Chris Cornell the Maranatha defense kept the ball in the hands of their offense for the majority of the night.

In the beginning of the second half the Spartans were able to score and bring it back within two after they started on their 27-yard line. Gray was able to sneak up the middle for 17 yards and his second rushing score of the night.

After that score it was all Minutemen football. Scoring 27 unanswered points after the LC opening score in the third quarter.

A late 38 yard touchdown run by Spartan running back Kevin Stoner for ended the scoring on the night.

La Canada falls to (2-2) and will play at Arroyo before opening up Rio Hondo League play against South Pasadena.

Maranatha with the victory is now (4-1) and will play Western Christian at home.
