Wolfpack battles back against Oilers

(South El Monte) – Sometimes the best defense is a good offense.  This was the case Saturday afternoon as the Claremont Wolfpack accumulated 24 hits in a 13-8 victory over the Montebello Oilers in the championship game of the Arroyo tournament.

The Oilers managed 16 hits on three different pitchers.

Claremont started the game with great enthusiasm.  After Conley Jones hit a single to left field, Kiana Moreno hit a double and brought in Jones in for the score.  Becky Ireland would then add an RBI of her own, hitting a single to right field and bringing in Moreno.  Oilers pitcher Evelyn Hernandez stopped the momentum there, catching a line drive from Faith Song and throwing it to first for a double play. The next batter grounded out.

The Oilers responded in its own half of the inning, with the bases loaded and only one out, Oiler’s Jacqueline Lopez was hit by a Carissa Bender pitch, which brought Briana Alvarez in to cut the deficit.

Montebello did its damage in the second inning.

Alyssa Soneff scored for the Oilers on a sacrifice fly.

Struggling with control, Bender walked two straight batters.  A passed ball brought in Andrea Rocha. The Wolfpack brought in its second pitcher of the game with Song.

With two outs April Marquez became the third Montebello runner to score after a throwing error by the catcher.

The fourth inning proved to be the deciding factor of the game.

Song hit a double to start off the inning, which would start up a flurry of hits.  The Wolfpack scored seven runs on ten hits.

Passed balls hurt Claremont in the fourth.  Marquez scored off the second passed ball, and it set up a two run score after a Hernandez single.

Sophomore Jordan Navarro came in to pitch. She would finish out the game for the ‘Pack.

In the sixth, Song, who had only recorded one hit at the time, connected on Hernandez’s pitch; sending the ball to left field for a double and bringing in Moreno and Ireland in for the score. Song would be brought home by a Nina Gurgian double.

Montebello had the chance to come back in the sixth.  However, with the bases loaded and no out, Song made a great catch to stop a scoring opportunity.  The next two batters grounded out.

Jones would add a score in the seventh after an Oilers error.

Rocha added another run for Montebello in the seventh.
