Off The Cuff: July 4, 2009

Excuse me for my delay.  I am still reading “The Mitchell Report.”

I believe all of the San Gabriel Valley just passed out, due to the fact I am reading.

To answer Duane Barker’s comment on yesterday’s about “all” Dodger fans being thugs.

It is very difficult for me to sit here and think that those knowledgeable Dodger fans can’t stop the “thug life” quality of the remainder of the fans when a rival fan supports their team.

Personally, I love rival fans.  Most that follow their team are very knowledgeable and can carry a conversation.

Now that the comment was answered, can we talk about how great the 4th of July is.

It holds a great place in my heart.

Usually my father would make sure we were at a sporting event to watch fireworks.

It was the safest place to be and no fear of losing fingers.

My first happened at Anaheim Stadium, it was magic.  Since then, it has been NASL, MLS, minor league baseball, Arena Football and short track racing that have seen me on the fourth.

There was a time, it was about watching the Los Angeles Aztecs at the Rose Bowl and a great firework show.  That was when soccer was somewhat worth watching in the United States.

Now its watching either the Angels or Dodgers play an early game and stay for fireworks.

You can still catch the Los Angeles Galaxy and their firework show, but have to sit through 90 minutes of unwatchable soccer.

For those in the San Gabriel Valley, head out to Toyota Speedway at Irwindale for NASCAR’s Camping World West Series.

Not only will there be fireworks on the track, but after the 200 lap main event you will be able to watch one of the best firework shows in the Valley.

On that note, have a wonderful and safe Fourth of July.

Off The Cuff can be read at www.midvalleysports.com from Wednesday to Sunday.
