View’s Sweet Revenge

By George Hernandez

(El Monte)- Mountain View didn’t forget their 10-7 loss last year to Sierra Vista.

Jose “Nacho” Zamora, Igacio Castanada and Alfred Martinez carried the Vikes to a 16-14 win over the Dons Thursday night at Viking Stadium.

View pounded the ball on its first drive 80-yards and capped it off with a 5-yard touchdown run from Zamora to make it 7-0 after the extra point.

The Vikings defense held their own against the running attack of Sierra Vista and forced a punt, but a Mountain View fumble gave the ball right back.

The Dons pounded the ball themselves and Giovanni Rivera finished it off with a 30-yard run to paydirt to tie it up at 7-7.

The Vikings took a 9-7 lead when a bad snap on a punt sailed and Martinez tackled the SV punter in the end zone for safety.

View kept the moumentum and again ran the ball through the Dons’ defense and finished it off with Zamora’s 1-yard scamper to the end zone to make it 16-7 just before halftime, after a Chris Gonzalez extra point.

Sierra Vista’s Rivera led the Dons back as he was the workhorse on a third quarter drive that resulted in an eventual score to cut the View lead to 16-14.

Both teams defenses clamped down and didn’t allow any more scores. The Vikes’ Gonzalez saved the game when a bad snap went over his head and he was able to recover the ball and get the punt off with only 1:54 left in the game.

With 96-yards to go, Sierra Vista was stopped and the Vikings finished the game with a Gonzalez interception with 3 seconds left to secure the win.

Castanada, Martinez and Zamora combined for 208-yards on the ground. Martinez also had two sacks on defense.

Rivera had 23 carries for 138-yards and a score.

View improves to 2-1 and travels to Hoover next week, while Sierra Vista, (0-2) heads to Keppel.
