Two Villalobos too Much For Moors

Guerrero's record night was explosive.

(San Gabriel) – The offensive juggernaut that has become known as the San Gabriel Matadors was in full display against a highly-touted defensive side in Alhambra.

Once the rain subsided and the autumn chill filled the air the remainder of the night, San Gabriel’s offense proved that a highly efficient offense can beat a strong defense any night with an authoritative 69-14 Almont league win on Friday night.

Matador quarterback Andy Guerrero stamped his name in the record books by throwing seven touchdowns in the game and finishing the night 16 of 20 for 421 yards. Guerrero’s only blemish came late in the first quarter when Joseph Nieto stepped in front of a pass at the Matador 20-yard line.

After that Guerrero went on to complete 14 of his next 17 passes.

Alex and Joey Villalobos provided the offensive punch with a combined seven touchdown receptions and 367 yards on eight receptions. Joey Villalobos was a huge part of the San Gabriel offense late in the first quarter and early in the second with two touchdown receptions of 61 and 68.

Alex Villalobos finished with just six catches but did have five touchdown receptions and 238 yards. Alex scored on 34, 32, 12, and two-52 yard receptions.

Alex’s final score left Moor defenders strewn all over the field-turf surface as he avoided five Alhambra players enroute to the end zone.

As dominant as the Matadors were in the second and third quarter, the Moors found its way into the end zone first.

Nieto’s pick of Guerrero set Alhambra up with its best field position of the night inside the San Gabriel 10-yard line. Two plays later Ezra Broadus scored on a 5-yard plunge with 1:38 remaining in the first quarter.

The flood gates opened soon after that as Joey Villalobos scored three plays later on a 61-yard score to tie the game.

The Matadors went ahead for good with 9:41 remaining in the second quarter on Joey’s second touchdown of the night from 68-yards. The two scores by Joey were his only to receptions of the night.

The Moors receivers didn’t help Josh Mendoza either during the game as they dropped several passes that should have been caught leading to crucial third and longs or fourth down. Mendoza finished the night 11 of 33 for 104 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.

Mendoza’s touchdown pass came late in the fourth quarter with the game already decided.

San Gabriel’s run defense allowed just 134 yards on 29 carries.

Josh Mendoza had a rough night.
