Marco Ramirez Promoted to Head Coach at Schurr

(Montebello) – Marco Ramirez, who has been the Defensive Coordinator since 2006, was named the head coach at Schurr late Friday. Ramirez replaces Ben Negrete who retired in January.

“I’m ecstatic, to tell you the truth. This became my goal to become a head coach,” Ramirez said. “As alumni it was something I was striving for.”

Ramirez, a 1992 graduate of Schurr, is on campus now teaching Government and Economics. He has been a teacher at Schurr since 2005 and was a defensive line coach under Coach Elvin Dick from 2006- 2008.

Most of last year’s staff will be retained with Victor Salazar returning as OC.

“Philosophically we’ll remain the same. But some of our off season training might be a little different. We have already refocused a lot of our energy and we need to concentrate on listening more,” Ramirez said.

Schurr, who ran off a string of Almont League titles earlier this decade, finished 3-7 last year and out of the playoff picture.

“I’m excited. We have made some strides already. These kids aren’t used to losing and as former Spartans we’re going to do everything we can to change that,” Ramirez added.
