High School Softball Top 20

La Follette returns in an attempt to take South Hills to three straight CIF finals appearances.

With winter heading into hibernation and daylight savings time a week away, that means only one thing. Softball is barreling down on the high school scene with more questions than answers heading into the 2012 season.

This season doesn’t seem to have that one super team such as La Canada last season, but South Hills still returns a core group of players that could eventually see them in Irvine for its third finals appearance.

The Spartans still favored to win the Rio Hondo League will have to fight through Championship hangover for the first couple of weeks before we truly know how good they are with both Lauren O’Leary and Anna Edwards playing in college.

Without further ado, here begins this season’s top 20.

  1. South Hills (0-0) – The Huskies bring back almost every player that has appeared in two finals appearance.
  2. La Mirada (3-1) – Can the Matadores make it back to back finals appearances with nearly the same roster?
  3. La Canada (0-0) – Lauren Cox and Catherine Horner make a potent battery combination.
  4. Bonita (0-1) – Anissa Sanchez returns to the circle for Bearcats.
  5. Crescenta Valley (0-0) – Hannah Cookson is one to watch in CV land.
  6. Duarte (1-0) – Will Falcons regress from impressive 2011 season?
  7. Burroughs (2-0) – Haley Schulman will get the bulk of the starts as pitcher for Indians.
  8. Montebello (1-0) – Early favorites to win Almont with potent offensive lineup.
  9. Whittier Christian (1-0) – Mandie Perez is arguably one of the best middle infielders in the area.
  10. La Serna (0-1) – Lancers will have competition for Del Rio League title this season.
  11. St. Lucy’s (1-1) – Dani O’Toole is nearly unhittable for the Regents.
  12. San Dimas (1-1) – Can’t argue with good pitching combo of Elizabeth Celaya and Kaili Now.
  13. San Marino (2-1) – Michelle Floyd looks to rebound after tough sophomore season.
  14. West Covina (1-2) – Bulldogs look to battle Bonita for Hacienda Supremacy.
  15. Keppel (1-0) – Aztecs have been second best in Almont last two seasons.
  16. Gabrielino (0-0) – Could Eagles knock off Arroyo from Mission Valley perch.
  17. Bishop Amat (0-0) – If not for St. Joseph’s, Lancers would be top in Del Rey.
  18. Northview (0-1) – Vikings bring back Mejia, Erinn and Sarina Jaramillo.
  19. Glendora (1-1) – Tartans return Taylor Langdon to lead offense and pitching staff.
