Big surprises abound after a wild zero week kicks off the 2009 CIF High School season.  Whether it has anything to do with lack of practice time due to the fires or just looking ahead to the next big game


1.  CHARTER OAK (1-0) – LW: 1 – Sluggish first game may have been more to do with looking ahead to Rancho Cucamonga than Gardena’s talent.  NEXT GAME:  9/11 @ University

2.  SOUTH HILLS (0-0) – LW: 2 – After the season is finished expect to see quarterback Jacob Shirley as the starter.  NEXT GAME: 9/11 VS Ayala

3.  DIAMOND RANCH (1-0) – LW: 7 – The Panthers beat up on Muir and show last season’s run to the finals was no fluke.  NEXT GAME: 9/11 VS Colony

4.  CALIFORNIA (0-0) – LW:  5 – Big test to open the season as Condors get Michael Ball and the Rowland Raiders.  NEXT GAME:  9/11 VS Rowland

5.  SCHURR (0-0) – LW: 6 – Will Cantu be able to lead the Spartans in home opener victory?  NEXT GAME:  9/11 @ Burroughs

6.  MUIR (0-1) – LW: 3 – If any team deserves the benefit of the doubt for losing it is the Mustangs.  No practice time during wild fire hurt.  NEXT GAME: 9/11 @ Oaks Christian

7.  LA SERNA (0-0) – LW: 9 – Lancers ready for tussle in Downey to open the season.  NEXT GAME:  9/11 VS Downey

8.  ROWLAND (0-0) – LW: 10 – Coach Snyder has the Mid Valley karma going for him as the Raiders open up the 2009 season against California.  NEXT GAME:  9/11 @ California

9.  SAN GABRIEL (0-1) – LW: 8 – Matadors lack of practice time hurt them against a very physical Cathedral team.  NEXT GAME: 9/11 @ South Pasadena

10.  WEST COVINA (0-1) – LW: 4 – Bulldogs looked sluggish in loss against El Rancho.  Ricky Johnson was the one player who is in mid-season form.  NEXT GAME:  9/11 @ Venice

11.  CRESCENTA VALLEY (0-0) – LW: 11 – Lucky for Falcons season starts this week as they had no practice time during zero week.  NEXT GAME: 9/11 @ Verdugo Hills

12.  BONITA (0-1) – LW: 12 – Bearcats had every opportunity to beat Westview on Friday night and didn’t capitalize on mistakes by Wolverines.  NEXT GAME: 9/11 @ Claremont

13.  WALNUT (0-0) – LW: 13 – The Mustangs come into 2009 with high aspirations.  They maybe playing under the radar for the first few weeks.  NEXT GAME: 9/11 VS Diamond Bar

14.  BURROUGHS (0-0) – LW: 14 – Torosian believes that quarterback Lucas Yanez will be throwing the ball more this season.  NEXT GAME:  9/11 @ Schurr

15.  SANTA FE (0-0) – LW: 16 – After watching league rival beat San Antonio League opponent, Chiefs now have reason to think Del Rio league is much stronger.  NEXT GAME:  9/11 @ Warren.

16.  MONTEBELLO (1-0) – LW: 18 – Oilers begin new era with a shutout victory over Bellflower.  Big test forthcoming against Baldwin Park.  NEXT GAME:  9/11 VS Baldwin Park

17.  WILSON (0-0) – LW: 19 – Coach Zavala has his team believing they can compete in the Miramonte.  NEXT GAME:  9/10 @ Sonora

18.  ALHAMBRA (0-1) – LW: 17 – Moors lose “Battle of Boyle Heights” against a very tough LA City team.  NEXT GAME:  9/18 @ Temple City

19.  EL RANCHO(1-0) – LW: 26 – I can admit when Mid Valley is wrong, this team may surprise.  They already took down one big team, can they do it again?  NEXT GAME:  9/11 @ Cerritos

20.  BURBANK (1-0) – LW: 21 – Begins season with impressive 21-6 victory over Simi Valley.  NEXT GAME:  9/11 @ Chaminade

21.  WHITTIER (0-0) – LW: 22 – Cardinals must play ball control against a very tough Chino team this week.  NEXT GAME:  9/11 @ Chino

22.  BELL GARDENS (0-0) – LW: 23 – Will get tested early this season when they face Montview League Champ Azusa in first game.  NEXT GAME:  9/11 @ Azusa

23.  ARCADIA (0-1) – LW:  20 – Looked suspect against Monrovia on Thursday, could be due to lack of practice.  Only time will tell.  NEXT GAME:  9/11 VS St Francis

24.  PASADENA (0-1) – LW: 24 – MacFarland era gets off to a slow start as they failed to score against Westchester.  NEXT GAME: 9/11 VS Saugus

25.  LOS ALTOS (0-1) – LW: 15 – Bad beginning to what was to be a promising season.  Conquerors will need to rebound before Miramonte League season.  NEXT GAME:  9/11 VS Northview

26.  KEPPEL (0-0) – LW: 27 – Bobby Madrid’s coaching debut is now this week as Pomona game was postponed due to no practice.  NEXT GAME:  9/11 VS Workman

27.  GLENDALE (0-0) – LW: 26 – Open season against Cathedral who just beat up on a good San Gabriel team.  NEXT GAME:  9/11 @ Cathedral

28.  PIONEER (0-0) – LW: 28 – Can this team compete in improved Del Rio League?  NEXT GAME: 9/11 VS Glenn

29.  HOOVER (0-0) – LW: 29 – Can the Tornados spring an upset at home on Thursday?  NEXT GAME:  9/10 VS Sierra Vista

30.  NOGALES (0-1) – LW: 30 – Actually put up 16 points to a very good Baldwin Park team on opening night.  There might be hope yet.  NEXT GAME:  9/10 VS Garey
