M & M Boys Spark Burroughs

Burroughs running back Israel Montes

(Burbank)- Garrett Manoukian and Israel Montes combined for three fourth quarter touchdowns to lead Burroughs to a 24-7 victory over Glendale Thursday night at District Memorial Field.

After controlling much of the first half, including having its offense on the field for all but one play in the first quarter, the Indians found themselves up only 3-0 at the break.

With 49 seconds left in the third that advantage was erased when the Nitros Mike Davis, lined up at tailback, took a pitch and went left. With the way closed he began to reverse field and broke a tackle. Then Davis broke another tackle in his backfield, then broke a third tackle before turning the right corner and going 57-yards for the go ahead touchdown.

The Davis home run was interesting because it was a two play drive, taking less than a full minute. Glendale’s opening possession of the second half, looking much like Burroughs’s at the start of the game, consumed nearly nine full minutes and 66 yards before ending with Manoukian intercepting a pass at the 15.

Down 7-3, and still winless on the season, the Indians went to work behind their offensive line. Manoukian broke off chunks of yardage with runs of 22, 14, and 21 yards. Manoukian’s 7-yard touchdown run with 9:55 to play was wiped out by a holding penalty.  The next play became a 12-yard touchdown run by Manoukian that was erased by a holding penalty.

“He was tired,” said Indians HC Keith Knoop. “But he said give me the ball again. So we gave it to him.”

This time Manoukian scored on a 20-yard run to give his team the lead for good.

Six minutes later he struck from 41-yards out on a run to paydirt. Montes then provided the capper with a 27-yard touchdown run as the Nitros defense began to wear down.

Montes finished with 185 yards on 27 carries, while Manoukian added yards on 9-carries to go with his two touchdowns.

The win evened Burroughs Pacific accounts at 1-1, and made them 1-4 overall. For Glendale they fell to 1-4, 0-2 in league play.
