Covina Tournament: La Salle, Rowland, Roll to Victories

(Covina) – La Salle and Rowland both jumped out to double digit halftime leads and went on to big wins over Charter Oak and South El Monte respectively Wednesday night at the Covina Tournament. Rowland’s margin of victory was so big there was a running clock in the fourth quarter.

Freshman phenoms Milan Acquuah (23) and Vance Jackson combined for 39 points to lead La Salle to a 63-47 win over Charter Oak. The Lancers jumped out to a 35-19 lead at the half, extended it to a 20 by the end of three and coasted from there.

Charter Oak got off to a slow start hitting just three of 12 shots in the first quarter falling behind 14-6. Acquuah hit a pair of threes and scored nine points in the second to spark a 21 point quarter as the Lancers sped out to a 35-19 advantage.

The Chargers got a three pointer and five points from Jose Bonilla and a pair of buckets by Chris Case in the third but were still outscored by eight in the quarter.

La Salle opened up a 48-28 lead by the end of the third quarter to put it away. No other Lancers joined the fabulous freshmen in double figues. Israel Lacy and Austin Alvarado both finished with six.

For Charter Oak Dan Gutierrez led the team with 13 and Kevin Mendez added nine.

Rowland 70 South El Monte 24

This one was over almost before it got started. Rowland jumped out to a 19-7 lead in the first quarter, increased it to 36-13 by the half and eventually forced a running fourth quarter clock in a 70-24 trouncing of South El Monte.

The Raiders found little resistance from South El Monte

The Raiders outscored South 28-10 in the third to lead 64-23 heading into the final quarter and the running clock.

Joe Dionisio nailed four threes on his way to 19 points to lead the Rowland explosion. Dionisio scored eight points, including a pair of threes in the first quarter to get Gordon Hamlow’s crew off and running. Chris Arzadon added 14 points and Saeed Montoya scored 10.

Jesus Jr Hernandez scored five points in the fourth quarter and finished with nine.

South El Monte managed just one point in the fourth quarter and 11 in the second half. The Eagles had only nine field goals the entire game.

Richard Natividad had 10 of the 24 to lead the team and Antonio Sandoval had eight.
