 MMA Heavyweight Top 30

Fedor is Still the Top Dog

Fedor is Still the Top Dog

Everyone knows Fedor is the baddest man on the planet. Who are 29 other fighters that would love to dethrone the heavyweight and pound for pound king?

1. Fedor Emelianenko (30-1, 1NC): His last two wins have been over two former UFC Heavyweight champions in less than four minutes combined.

2. Brock Lesnar (4-1): Only five fights into his MMA career and already a top flight heavyweight. That’s what happens when you beat the likes of Randy Coutre, Frank Mir and Heath Herring. Maybe he’s the man to beat Fedor.

3. Josh Barnett (24-5): After losing his chance to take the top spot from Fedor because he tested positive for steroids, he’ll have to do something big before getting a shot with a real organization.

4. Frank Mir (12-4): After two years it looked like his career was done. But he came back and beat Lesnar and Antonio Nogueira to become interim champ. Let’s see what he does after getting dominated by Lesnar in their rematch.

5. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (32-5-1): The greatest ju-jit-su heavyweight of all time, Big Nog has had wars with great fighters like Fedor, Couture, Cro Cop, and Barnett and has been successful. But are the wars catching up to him and does he have another title run in him?

6. Shane Carwin (11-0): He’s the only man in the UFC that can match the power and strength of Lesnar. We’ll see what happens at UFC 105 when they meet.

7. Junior Dos Santos (9-1): He proved he’s not just a prospect anymore after stopping Mirko “Cro Cop” at UFC 103. Dos Santos is right in the heavyweight title picture in the UFC.

8. Randy Couture (16-10): Two losses in a row might move others out the Top 10 but against Big Nog and Lesnar that isn’t anything to be ashamed of. “Captain America” is the greatest MMA champion of all time. Every time someone counts him out he wins another title.

9. Alistair Overeem (29-11): Hasn’t defended his Strikeforce heavyweight title since he won it two years ago against Paul Buentello, but has three wins in four fights and a no contest against Cro Cop leaving him in the Top 10.

10. Brett Rogers (10-0): After a devastating knock out of former #2 heavyweight Andrei Arlovski, he gets the first crack at Fedor in Strikeforce. Good Luck! He’s going to need it.

11. Andrei Arlovski (15-7): After two stunning KO loses to Fedor and Rogers what’s next for the former UFC champ? Maybe he can take out another IFL fighter.

12. Cain Velasquez (6-0): With great wrestling and improving striking every fight, a win over Ben Rothwell will give him a shot at the winner of Lesnar and Carwin.

13. Aleksander Emelianenko (15-3): His last six fights, all wins, have not lasted past the first round, but not one of those fighters is on this list. He needs to come to the states.

14. Roy Nelson (13-4): A TKO win over Kimbo Slice on “TUF 10” isn’t that impressive, but three of his four losses have been at the hands of Arlovski (KO), Jeff Monson (controversial decision) and Ben Rothwell (controversial decision). He could be much higher.

15. Fabricio Werdum (12-4-1): Wins over Overeem, Gonzaga, and Aleks put him on the map and gave him a shot at the Strikeforce strap before Overeem pulled out. He could be the next man in line to fight Fedor.

16. Ben Rothwell (30-6): For his first fight in the UFC he will face Velasquez. A win will put him on the map with the fans and Dana White.

17. Gabriel Gonzaga (11-4): After a KO loss to #1 contender Carwin, Gonzaga had a dominating win over Chris Tuchscherer. Will he ever get back in the title picture?

18. Sergei Kharitonov (16-4): Has impressive wins over Overeem, Werdum and “Ninja” Rua, He needs to get some fights in the states to get noticed.

19. Paul Buentello (27-10): Finally back in the UFC; he should have never been let go. Will face the fastest UFC K.O. holder Todd Duffee.

20. Tim Sylvia (25-6): The two time UFC champ has come on hard times losing three in a row, Yes, two were to Big Nog and Fedor but a 9 second K.O. loss to Rey Mercer dropped him off the MMA map. Win over Jason Riley wasn’t that big.

21. Dave Herman (15-1): With an impressive record and fighting better competition every fight “Pee-Wee” is UFC bound.

22. Cheick Kongo (14-5-1): Kongo falls in and out of the Top 10 every other fight. To stay with the heavyweight elite he has to get some ground game.

23. Jeff Monson (31-9): Lost his last fight to Pedro Rizzo, but has fought five times in 2009 going 4-1 including wins over Nelson and Kharitonov.

24. Gilbert Yvel (36-13-1): “The Hurricane’s” last fight was a devastating KO win over Rizzo, and he’s won 8 of his last 9 fights. His only loss was to Josh Barnett.

25. Eddie Sanchez (10-3): Sanchez had a nice stay in the UFC and is on a two fight win streak. He’s a solid striker with good takedown defense and he’ll get another invite to the big show.

26. Antonio Silva (13-1): Fighting only has-beens is the only way “Junior” is going to move up the rankings. He could use some top competition. His next bout we’ll see how real he is when he fights Werdum at Strikeforce “Fedor vs. Rogers.”

27. Pedro Rizzo (17-9): With two highlight reel KO loses to Barnett and Yvel, “The Rock” came back and had an impressive win over Monson.

28. Todd Duffee (5-0): None of Duffee’s fights have lasted beyond the second round. His last fight was a 7 second KO of Tim Hague.

29. Bobby Lashley (4-0): This former pro wrestler might not be jumping right into the big show like Lesnar but every fight he’s fought someone better.

30. Mike Russow (12-1): He got his UFC shot and took care of Justin McCully but who hasn’t? He needs to move up a little more in competition.
