(Covina) – Speed Kills; Just ask any one of Northview’s special team members after its outing with Pomona’s speed demon and eventual X-Factor, Kheenyon Wood. Wood made all of the difference for the Red Devil offense by providing a spark and homerun threat every time he touched the ball.
The Speedster capped off his night by scoring 14 points for the Red Devils, who were able to overcome a slow start to come away with a 17-9 come from behind victory at Covina District Field Friday night.
Trailing at halftime, Wood returned the second half kick off 95 yards to the house on a dynamic display of speed and precision cutting, giving the Red Devils their first lead of the night with 11:43 to play in the third quarter. Wood also scored the first points for Pomona when he picked off Viking Quarterback Peter VanDereb, caught a couple of great blocks, and went 80 yards for the score mid-way through the second to put Pomona up 9-7.
Northview was in control 9-0 at the end of the first after a Brian Salinas interception set up a VanDereb quarterback keeper score at the 1; then a forced safety by the Northview defense tacked on two more.
****Damien Lavin played speed counterpart against Wood, but had no success.
****Darrly Aggers made big hits on defense for Pomona.
****Northview plays Wilson after a Bye week.
****Pomona is now 6-0, 2-0 in league setting up big showdown against San Dimas (3-4, 3-0).
**** Fredrick Padilla deflected the pass that was intercepted by Salinas.
**** Red Devils Rally from behind score 17 unanswered.
**** A 28-yard field goal with 11:45 in the fourth was icing on the cake for Pomona.
****Northview also had a 40 yd field goal opportunity fall just short with 3:45 in the third.
