Marco Ramirez resigns at Schurr after a three year run

By Tim Peterson

(Montebello) – Marco Ramirez has stepped down as the head coach at Schurr after three seasons.

Ramirez guided the Spartans to the playoffs in two of his three years at the helm. In 2013, Schurr advanced to the second round of the Mid-Valley Division playoffs before losing to Arroyo. They beat Viewpoint in the first round. In 2012, the Spartans lost to San Marino in the first round.

Ramirez was 14-19 overall and finished 4-6 overall this past season. Ramirez took over a program that went 3-7 in Ben Negrete’s final year in 2011.

“I officially resigned at 11:30 Friday morning after a brief meeting with my principal,” Ramirez said. “I resigned because of lack of administrative support.”

No successor has been officially named but former Bell Gardens Head Coach David Ramos is expected to be announced as early as Monday multiple sources have confirmed.

@relaxpuppies it seems someone done you wrong at GHS. Dont worry about the Schurr QB. He will do well were ever he decided to play. He knows he has to earn the QB spot anywhere he plays. Nothing is given! This is why he works hard and puts in the work. He will contribute to any school he plays for. Its called teamwork. Not being the man.

Welcome to the new day! This is the future of high school sports… Shuffling around to new schools looking for the big ticket to D1 status! I disagree with you regarding Coach Lasoya, it’s a promotion! You would do it and I would do it! If Schurr had thought that highly of Nick why wouldn’t they him the head guy? Bottom line is Schurr is going about its business all wrong! It’s a mess, you couple that with DADDY BALL mentality at Schurr and the kids are not gonna stick around for this non sense! I’ll tell you this tho… For all the kids considering going to Garfield. Becareful what you getting yourself into! I know the grass looks greener, but believe ITS NOT! There is such a toxic environment and the way they treat “Certain” kids is unlike anything you’ve ever dealt with! For Example: they are telling Adam Polanco (Schurr) come over you will be our guy! But there’s a guy there now that was told the same thing now what? They promised the world to a different Qb last year then ran him off because he didn’t do things the “Bulldog” way! It’s a joke! Henry, don’t do it brotha. My guess is you will do it. My guess is you’ll be looking for your third school in three years once you open your eyes to the clueless undisclipned approach there!

Sounds like this Coach Losoya is a great guy! NOT!!!

Run away when there are challenges? Doesn’t sound like a great coach to me. If he was a great coach, he would weather the storm and keep Schurr on the map!

  9. January 31, 2015 - 12:16 pm | Permalink

Too bad if these kids are going to transfer, but schools need to give coaching staffs time to develop, case in point is Buena Park, once a very poor program has been turned around and have recruiters visiting their school regularly
Losing Nick Losoya is huge, he’s a hell of a coach!!!

  10. January 31, 2015 - 8:48 am | Permalink

Nick Lasoya leaving for Amat hurts much more than ANY other coach that was on that staff. The glue is gone. The flood gates are officially open. 10-15 kids will be wearing different jerseys!
Btw Garfield you you may get a few of the boys but your coaches will blow it they’re too busy listening to themselves talk!
The hill has eyes!!!! Recover Redeem Revenge!

@Bulldogs have bite- 90% of the teams in California? Come on now, Garfield has yet to beat a southern section team. They still have trouble beating southeast. I would agree that right now Garfield would beat Schurr but with the coaches they have had, that’s not saying much. But to say that you guys would beat 90% of the teams in cali? You guys live in the city section bubble which is a very small division.

Yes, Garfield probably has the toughest schedule year in year out. Winning doesn’t come easy going against future Div. 1 prospects, and future NFL talent. I can say this as a fact, They can beat at least 90 percent of high schools in California.

Hearing that former Schurr Assistant Coach Nick Losoya is taking his son to Amat. He started for the Spartans at Corner as a sophomore. More transfers could be on the way.

  15. January 30, 2015 - 12:55 am | Permalink

All good points regarding GHS they do try but if that’s your hat hanger that hang around with top schools. That’s a losers mindset. We don’t deal with moral victories here. Soon as they step out they get waxed! I do think they beat Schurr but not by much! As I said they coaching staff is not good! Anyone can see that. They get talent more than most schools but they DO NOT DEVELOP this talent. The offense is just a bunch of broken plays that score because of the very tanned NEW RECRUITS athleticism. On top of that the coaches are obnoxious as hell act as though they invented the game.
@PolancoFamily where is your son gonna play next year? With all due respect sir, you’ve been burned by this school before (GHS) Don’t buy the jibberish. I don’t expect for you to stay at Schurr with offense they will run. My advice is go somewhere else. Somewhere that will feature your sons talent to throw and run! Somewhere where he is the man! He’s that good. Garfield is toxic deep down you know it. Santa Fe or La Serna is much better choice. Arroyo would highlight his talents.

All these comments just confirm the big problem that exists in high school sports. Why can’t kids just stay at there home schools, regardless of the coaching staff, and win a CIF championship at a school in which they belong.

It really bothers me when kids leave their home school because they want to win a CIF championship else where. Prove yourselves and win a championship at YOUR own school. Only then are you a real champion!

The Polanco Family would like to thank Coach Ramirez and his staff for all the support they gave Adam Polanco and the rest of the Spartan football team. Though it was not the year that we had planned to have, Coach Ramirez was able to give Adam memories that will last him a life time. People don’t realize what a difficult year it was for him personally and professionally and the sacrifices he had to make to keep the team together. The administration doesn’t realize that they are getting rid of a true leader with Spartan tradition. And for the kids that are moving on or staying at Schurr, I want to wish you the best of luck in whatever you choose to do.

I hope once they leave they don’t come back. These parents all wanna chase the ring. Instead of staying and earning one! Good luck!

I wonder if the Schurr QB’s dad will make him go to Garfield since all his buddy coaches have left. If that’s the case, he should let his son play wherever he wants. Let him make the decision. He should be allowed to attend whichever school he wants, so he can be with his friends and teammates.

@oilermake I just hope they dont end up at montbello! 106yrs your schools been around and this is the first time that your school has won back to back league titles! And to top it off, closet thing your school has came to seeing a championship is the second round in the playoffs! Schurr had on of its weakest team two years ago make the second round. When montbello had its best team in years and you couldn’t get out of the first round! If the transfers were smart, they would see that montbello has there best coach coaching nose guards when he should be calling their defense!

1st and foremost coach Ramos needs to keep coach Losoya. He is the glue to keeping this group together. Why do you think coaches are telling the kids to transfer. These coaches know the future is bright for the kids and schurr. Also there is a good contingency of parents coming up to help the program along. Coach Ramos may not know the SPARTAN WAY!! But he sure jump to the chance to find out.

Its interesting that all these supporters are on here voicing their opinions. Where were you all season? last i saw only 2 to 3 parents where at practices. No Alumni support what so ever. The same Parents helped Ramirez try to make this program successful. ITS TOO LATE!!! Get over it….coaches are gone. You should of voiced your opinion months ago. Lets move forward. Who cares if players leave. We are not D1, My son wet to Schurr not for the football program but for the academic opportunities. If i was looking for a Football program i would take him to St John Bosco/Servite why would i take him to a school like Garfield? Lets embrace the new Coaches and see what happens. Too early to judge. Good luck to all the coaches wherever they end up we appreciate all you did for the Spartans.

This is all nonsense. To many armchair quarterbacks. Lets support our schools and their administrators decisions. Sometimes school administrators need to make some tough decisions that others might not like. I don’t know of any administrator that makes decisions to screw up their school or programs.

People need to stop bashing these coaches who volunteer their time to be head coaches. They do not get paid nearly enough what they deserve. All their time, efforts and commitment need to be applauded.

Coach Marco Ramirez is a good coach. He was only at the helm for 3 years. He didn’t have enough time to fully develop his own program. He will only get better with time and wherever he ends up.

Coach Dave Ramos is also a good coach. He won several league titles during his tenure. It was good for him to be away from the head coaching position for a couple of years. He is re-energized, has probably grown a lot as a head coach by being in his supporting role the last couple of years, and is probably ready now to take it a step further.

Whatever decision the Schurr administration makes, I will be there to support them.
