Lancers Make it Three In a Row in Lady Knights Tournament

(El Monte, Ca) – For the third straight year Bishop Amat was crowned champion of the Lady Knights Tournament with a 46-36 win over Sonora.

The Lancers survived a one for 23 shooting slump that spanned the second and third quarter as their defense was the star of the game limiting Raiders forward Jasmine Hills to just 11 points on the evening.

“It was an ugly game,” said Bishop Amat head coach Richard Wiard.  “I thought we got some good looks at the basket, they just didn’t go down.  Defensively, we caused them some problems and prevented them from getting into the game. “

Bishop Amat’s Arielle Wideman snapped the cold-shooting streak with a ten-foot jumper midway through the third quarter.

Wideman would make her next three shots to help extend the Lancers lead to 36-18.  She finished with 11 points on the night.

Early on it appeared that Bishop Amat would run Sonora out of the building when Gina Henderson came off the bench and was part of a 12-3 run in which she scored four points and three assists to end the first quarter.

The Raiders tried to keep it close in the second half as they closed the third quarter on a 6-3 run and in the fourth quarter as they closed out the game on a 10-4 run to make the final respectable.

Lancers were also helped out by Leticia Galarza’s 11 points.

Andrea Villanueva of Bishop Amat was named tournament M.V.P.
