(Covina) The Northview Vikings and the Covina Colts battled Friday night for the spot as top dog in the Valle Vista League. It was the Vikings who came out on top leading wire-to-wire in a 42-28 win at Covina District Field.
Northview got the party started early in the first quarter when Steven Comstock found Elijah Grijalva in the endzone from 12-yards away to go up 7-0 with 9:11 showing on the clock.
The Vikings pushed their lead to 14-0 with a little over a minute gone in the second period. Comstock scored on a six yard run that capped a nine play 55-yard drive.

Williams deep over the middle for a 67-yard strike to paydirt.
Northview pushed their lead back to 14 with less than a minute left to play in the half. Comstock hooked up with Dominic Ramirez from 12 yards out.
The Colts came out of the halftime break with a fire lit under them and proceeded to go on a five play 61 yard drive that culimanated with 36 yard pass from Apodaca to Daniel Tamayo.
Just when Covina cut the lead to seven, the Vikings responded with a 72 yard drive of their own with Andres Hooper scoring on an 18 yard run.
Down 28-14 the Colts answered back again with 3:06 left in the third quarter as Apodaca found Tamayo again this time for 37 yards.
Comstock and Ramirez hooked up again early in the final frame on a 37 yard pitch and catch and when Alex Calderon booted the extra point through the Vikings had the lead 35-21.
Covina show they still had signs of life and went a quick 80 yards on five plays to cut the lead down to seven again on a one yard run by Michael Roberts.
The seven point deficit was as close as the Colts got as Northview answered the score again on a 41 yard run by Comstock.
*** Comstock finished the night hitting on 18 of 28 passes for 177 yards and three scores and also lead both teams in rushing with 181 yards and two more scores.
*** Apodaca passed for 306 yards and three touchdowns completing 13 of his 27 pass attempts.
*** Andres Hooper added 110 yards and a touchdown to the Vikings rushing total.
*** The Colts leading rusher was David Barragan who managed 69 yards on 17 carries.
*** Dominic Ramirez led all receivers with 13 catches for 108 yards and two touchdowns.
*** David Tamayo was Covina’s leading receiver with four catches for 100 yards and two scores.
*** Both teams scored on three of five possesions in the second half.
*** Hakim Williams had only two catches on the night but both were huge plays and an average of 48 yards per catch.
*** The win pushed Northview’s record to 5-0 in league, 9-1 overall and their second consecutive Valle Vista League title.
*** Covina’s record dropped to 3-2 in league, 6-4 overall and will await Sunday’s playoff pairing announcement to see if they will be playing next week.
