1.) Hisashi Iwakuma fails physical with Los Angeles Dodgers and re-signed with the Seattle Mariners. The Dodgers offered Iwakuma a three-year $45-million contract after Zack Greinke signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

2.) Former Maranatha HC/Whittier Christian DC Pete Karavedas went 5-6 in his first year as head coach at Sunny Hills High School. The Lancers, playing in the Freeway League, made the playoffs for first time since 2008.

3.) The Central Division’s number one returning passer next year? (Pending the expected CIF divisional shake up) Diamond Bar quarterback Grant Mestas, who completed 90 of 164 passes for 1,198 yards and eight touchdowns.

5.) On this date in 1949 the Philadelphia Eagles beat the Los Angeles Rams 14-0 in the NFL Championship game.

7.) Ty Cobb was born on this day in 1886.

8.) San Marino and La Mirada playing in state championship games on Saturday (tomorrow): The Titans versus Central Catholic at Sacramento State. The Matadores versus Campolindo at home.

9.) On this day in 1865, the U.S. House of Representatives passes the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, abolishing slavery in America. The amendment read, “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude…shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.”

10.) Adam Polanco, who started at quarterback for Schurr as a freshman in 2014, appeared in 11 games this season for City Section Garfield. Polanco completed 77 of 162 attempts for 1,190 yards and 15 touchdowns. He also rushed for four scores.
