Oilers Too Slick for Aztecs

(Keppel HS) – Daniel Flores’ 14 footer with 8 seconds left in overtime lifted CIF Division 1AA’s ninth ranked Montebello to a 60-59 win over Keppel Tuesday night. Montebello improved to 20-1 overall and 3-0 in Almont League play while Keppel dropped to 15-4 and 2-1.

  Senior forward Andrew Torres wasted no time on the OT tipoff as he raced underneath 4 seconds in for a bucket and 54-52 Montebello lead. Torres finished with a dozen points and 14 rebounds.

  Keppel buried 6 free throws in 6 attempts to take a 58-54 lead. Jordan Young hit two from the charity stripe to with 1:14 to play for the four point lead. The Aztecs didn’t make a field goal in the overtime however and Montebello went on a 6-1 run to close it out.

  Aztec guard Timmy Wong led all scorers with 22 points and also handed out 4 assists. Sam Thim added 14, and Justin Young notched 11 and grabbed 14 caroms.

  Jeremy Solis carried Montebello with hot shooting (4-6, 3-3 free throws) in the first half before ending with a co-team high 16 points. The normally high octane Michael Carabes was limited to a lone second quarter basket but did contribute three assists and a steal.

  Marcos Mejia shared high scoring honors for Montebello with Solis with 16. The senior point guard did a superb job attacking the Keppel defense for numerous layups. 7 foot junior center Antonio Worthy chipped in 9 points and pulled down 9 rebounds.
