Huskies Fall in Don Lugo Final

By Corey Kwok

(Covina) – Chino Hills used a two out, three run shot from Ricky Mount in the third and a complete game effort by pitcher Kevin Sprague to post a 5-1 win over South Hills in the Don Lugo Tournament title game Friday. Both teams came in undefeated.

Sprague escaped a first inning jam when South Hills loaded the bases with one out. Jacob Shirley singled through right side and Tyler France was hit by a pitch. Cody Doyle rapped a base hit through the same hole before scoring to tie the game 1-1 on a second base force out and fielder’s choice hit by CJ Saylor. Richie Rollice then hit a fly ball to center to end the threat before finishing off 17 of the next 21 batters. A line drive double play was served to end the game.

Kyle Garlick had Chino Hills rolling in the first, turning a two strike no ball hanger for a double to right center and then scoring on a wild pitch and an error.

South Hills’ Christian Ibarra started and threw four innings of eight hit ball with a slew of first pitch strikes. He gave up all five Chino Hills runs. At the start of the fifth he was replaced by Andrew Morales who went the final three and finished strong. He got out of a first and third, one out threat in the fifth then retired the last eight CH batters. He struck out the side in the seventh. Both pitchers fanned five.
