More For Montes And La Salle

La Salle QB, C.J. Montes

By Alex Gonzalez

(Monrovia) — La Salle quarterback CJ Montes threw four touchdown passes on 12-17 passing in the Lancers 42-40 come from behind win over Monrovia Friday night at Monrovia High School.

After sitting out the first three series on offense for the Lancers, freshmen quarterback, CJ Montes was already playing catch up when he entered the game. The Lancer offense struggled to get anything going with Chris Wilson who threw a pick six before he was sidelined.

The Lancer defense was the first to strike when Tre Stewart picked off Trevor McPherson’s pass and returned it for six early in the first quarter to put his team up 7-0.

That, however, was the only points scored before Monrovia scored 20 unanswered points before the half.

Runningback Maury Rams IV bulldozed his way into the end zone tying the ball game at seven. On the Lancers following possession Michael Washinton picked up Wilson’s pass and returned it to the house, pushing the lead 14-7 early in the second quarter.

The Lancer offense tried to answer back on their next possession, but Montes fumble as he was throwing and Frank Hernandez recovered for the Wildcats. Two plays later Washington hauled in McPherson’s pass for the touchdown,  extending Monrovia’s lead 20-7.

La Salle rallied back and responded on their next possession driving down the field in eight plays that was capped off by Montes linking up with his wideout for the seven-yard score with 5:40 left in the second frame.

However, M-Town answered right back of a scoring drive of their own when Rams punched in his second score of the night before intermission.

Following the break, the Lancer defense shut down Rams and forced the Wildcats to a quick three and out. Two plays later, Montes connected with his wideout again for a 40-yard bomb, making the score 21-27 after the point after attempt.

Monrovia answered right back when R’mon Huff caught the pass in traffic and danced his way to the end zone making the Wildcat score 34-21 mid-way through the third quarter.

The Lancers were able to return the favor when they drove down the field and ended their five play drive when Montes threw his third touchdown pass of the night, pulling with in six of the Wildcats.

After a series of punts by both schools, The Lancers took the lead when Montes faked the handoff and found his wideout alone in the end zone giving La Salle a 35-34 edge over Monrovia with 9:32 left in the game.

The Lancer offense then added insurance when their tailback ice skated his way into the end zone from 45-yards outs. La Salle lead 42-34 with 3:38 left to play.

M-Town did respond with a scoring drive on their next possession after Rams scored his third rushing score but the offense failed the 2-point conversion.

    Fyi Angelis Fan.
I was around during the Championship years and the only transfer I remember was Heyworth Monrovia Resident who went to SF orig & came home. Ainsworth Monrovia legacy came home. Who else, everyone else was Monrovia and stayed home instead of going to a private school. Please name off the transfers in so I can either see if I missed one or I can tell you how wrong you are. Scoby doesn’t count either they didn’t win that year and although from Duarte he is Monrovia also. Charter Oak always gets Pasadena/Duarte kids. The talent is here Just needs to stay here in MTOWN!

F’real, this entire thread became about yall whining about how to get terrible teams into the playoffs.

Every league champ makes the playoffs. The only chance of that not happening is in div 12 & 13, where there are more than 16 leagues represented in the div, but let’s be real, those divisions have so many teams specifically b/c they don’t win their leagues.
Once league champs are placed, then all 2nd place teams are placed, if there is room. Then all 3rd place teams are placed, if there is room. In the event of too many 2nd place or 3rd place teams, then they are eliminated using the old at-large formula, where head to head competition, and strength of schedule weigh more favorably than record….
Therefore, a 4-1 2nd place team with an overall record of 5-5 will make the tourney over a 3-2 3rd place team with an overall record of 7-3…if both bubble teams are of the same league placement (2nd place, 3rd place) then a 5-5 Hacienda League team will get in over a 7-3 MVL team.

When a team beats you 37-0 the previous season you cant qualify them as a cupcake! No one is pretending Monrovia is a threat to win C.I.F.

That’s not necessarily so. Last year, Harvard-Westlake went 3-2 in non-league games and 0-5 in league. They, like everyone else in their league, made playoffs. In the right division, you can get away with that.

LaSalle wasn’t a tough team on the schedule. If they were, it says a lot about your team.

I agree with you a 1000% but with the new system it could be a detriment. Because like PAC 5 scout said one loss in league and they can be watching the playoffs from home. Nothing wrong with scheduling a couple tough games but 4 out of 5 when you’re the underdog is not smart. You can be playoff ready all you want but you have to make the playoffs first.

One way for a team like Monrovia who lost to Burbank and La Salle is to root for their future success. Toughness of schedule matters plenty. That works more to a teams benefit than lining up patsies. Any way good luck Cats I hope you continue getting better.

I know the system well. The system stinks and I hate it. I do agree with you that 1-4 looks most likely to happen if not 0-5. . Don Lugo would be a huge upset and Damien a massive upset. Whittier is the best chance at a win. So League is where they have to put all their eggs in that basket. Which is my case and point. They lose a league game and they’re toast. I never said they would make it out of the first round and do anything in the playoffs but their best chance is to win League. Now my problem with the system is schools would be foolish to schedule up and going into League with a 1-4 record. Schools will start scheduling down. Especially if they’re in a competitive league. I think they should put more competitive equity into the releaguing process instead of the playoff divisions. A d13 school should be in a d13 league. Makes League play exciting instead of Monrovia and Arroyo getting free passes into the playoffs they should be in the same league with teams on their level or atleast close to it! You’re right D7 is loaded and Monrovia was the last school to get put into Division 7. One spot lower they would of been in D8.

Genius here. Dear Pops. I hate to smudge your rose colored spectacles with the finer points of the new playoff system but…. First off best case you guys go 2-3 in non league. Realistically 1-4 with a win over Whittier that probably loses you ranking points. 5-0 in league gets you in but even 4-1 with a best case 6-4 more real 5-5 won’t. There are 23 teams in division 7 and currently you are ranked 19 with monsters like Huntington Beach below you.Plus if you do sneak in which I doubt you will have the pleasure of playing the top seed away. Just do a little homework about last years playoff non invitees. There were plenty that did fine in a crummy league that ended up licking the window. Keep playing like these games don’t matter and if you tell your son that its simply a big fat lie. Genius out.

It’s not a knock on Cathedral! But let’s be real like you said Monrovia had some talented transfers come in true enough. Why because at that time they were one of the better options for parents to look at if they were unhappy with their cities public school system. But now Cathedral is a better option for the kids in this area. Can’t knock any parent for wanting what they think is best for their kid.

To sports Dad. Monrovia won 3 titles with talent all over the sgv. They also were in a deal league and division 10. Cathedral has nothing to do with this comment.

The coaching staff is not as bad as people think or say. The talent is nowhere near as good as the Cif Championship teams. Those teams were a perfect storm of the right kids at the right time and not having Cathedral being the juggernaut they’re becoming taking the most talented kids away. The concerning thing that I do see with this staff is the halftime adjustments. The St. Paul game and now this one the opponents made the better adjustments and won the 2nd half and the games. Still it’s barely the 2nd season and it’s hard to judge by that. They’re more competitive this season so you have to look at that and give them time to develop the program which seems to be aquiring more talent and keeping kids home.

First off League games is what gets you into the playoffs. You can go 0-5 non-league and if you win your league they’re not going to hold you out of the playoffs. Do you think a school can 5-0 in non league games and 0-5 in league and still make the playoffs with that same 5-5 record. So don’t tell me League games aren’t more important genius!

Sorry to burst your bubble Monrovia fan but these are not pre-season or practice games as you suggest. Under the new system these games count more toward playoff hopes than pounding Temple City and South Pasadena in league. Though they can recoup these two losses that were penciled in as wins are huge in relation to playoff hopes in their division.

These are pre-season games. I’m encouraged that Monrovia is realizing that their identity is as a running team. They played well enough to win and looked much improved in offense. Great job by La Salle and coaches every time Michael Washington left the game with cramps they went right after his replacement. Montes shunned Monrovia for La Salle ans first thought is oh what could’ve been. Kid is for real no way he’s not starting from this point forward.
